Phantasy Star Online 2 finally released here! And it’s glorious. I hate the fact that I’ve got to start over with nothing, but it’s really neat hearing the new English voice acting and being able to play the game in my native language. Here’s what I think of Phantasy Star Online 2!
It’s really something being able to log in to PSO2 without booting up the PSO2 Tweaker on my desktop. I don’t have to apply any English patches or try and decipher what that little piece of Japanese text is on my screen. I can simply log in and play my game without any of the headaches that came from setting up a Japanese Sega ID and playing it on the Japanese servers. The downside is that my character that I’ve been using for the last 5 years is there and I’m going to miss him terribly.
I have nothing in this version of PSO2 and it does bother me starting over from scratch. I have to work my way back up to episode 3 and collecting all of my gear again will be a pain in the ass. The good news is that I’ve fallen in love with this game all over again. If you’ve never played this game you’re in for a real treat. Yes, PSO2 is a really old game now. It released in 2012 so the graphics will undoubtedly not impress you in the slightest. The gameplay isn’t top-notch in this genre anymore either, but it’s still really good and the game runs really well on the Xbox One X.
The beginning of PSO2 has been streamlined and is much easier to get through than when I first started the game. I’m already level 12 and I only played for two hours. I remember leveling being a bit harder a few years back. I’m not complaining though. The faster I get back to where I was the better. So far, I’ve gone through the starting area and I just entered the Volcanic Caves and I’m looking forward to bitch smacking that dragon back to whatever hole it crawled out of.
What more can I write about a game that I’ve written so much about over the last few years? It’s officially here in the West and it’s just as awesome as the Japanese version of the game. It’s in English, has English voice acting, good gameplay, great music, and enemy designs. A lot of people have been waiting for this game to release here for a really long time and it’s finally here. I’ve played a lot of this game on the Japanese servers. I even reviewed it back before I changed my review style. It’s outdated now and a lot has changed since my original review, but I loved it even then.
A major change that I noticed was that expeditions are now open to everyone instead of being a private affair like it was when I was a regular player. I saw people running around and killing shit that wasn’t even in my party. It was awesome and we all teamed up and did various different events together before going our separate ways. When you make it to the boss room it reverts back to being either single-player or group based with your party.
PSO2 is great. It runs really well on the Xbox One X and has aged really well in my opinion. I hope this game catches on here, but I do think Sega released this game past its prime and I think that almost everyone that wanted to play this game already has and will have little to no desire to change over from the Japanese version of the game to this one. I hope I’m wrong because I want this game to succeed, but that remains to be seen.
