The first thing I did when the Internet turned back on today was download the free demo to Project Octopath and I love it.
Project Octopath took me by surprise. I had high hopes that the first JRPG on the Switch (not counting I Am Setsuna) would be good, but I never expected it to be this good. The story in this game is dark as hell. I chose the Dancer for the demo and I never expected some of the dialogue I got in this game. This game treated me like an adult and I was completely engrossed in it from the moment I started playing until the “thank you for playing” sign flashed across my screen. If the final game is as dark as the opening scenes this is going to be something special.
Having my pimp call my character a whore, slap her around, and ask her to pleasure him with her mouth was intense. I actually reacted to it and had people coming over to see what I was doing on my Switch. I usually never do that in games. I didn’t react in a bad way. I was genuinely surprised at what was happening in the story. I really want to know how the other playable character’s story is going to play out. I think I’ve had enough for now because I’m about to jump into Divinity: Original Sin 2, but I really want to know what happens next in this game.
2018 can’t get here fast enough. Playing this demo has convinced me to buy this game. The Switch is getting some fantastic exclusives and if the final product can keep this pace going this game will be something special. I read some post about this game being ugly, but I can assure you that it’s far from it. That’s just Youtube’s shitty compression system at work. This game looked absolutely beautiful on the Switch in handheld mode. I haven’t tried it in TV mode yet and I probably never will. The gameplay is a lot like Bravely Default, but it’s a darker game. You’re not going to get jokes, and light-hearted humor here. The game is visually darker compared to the Bravely series too.
There are some things I want to know about this game before it releases. Will I be able to control the random encounter rate? If I clear all the enemies on my first turn will more of them show up so I can earn more experience points? I would like to be able to control the encounters so I can lower them on maps that I’ve out-leveled and raise on maps that I’m grinding on. We’ll most likely get more info once a release date is set. What we have right now is really good and I can’t get enough of it. This is just a demo, but I can see myself putting some hours into it before I move on.
Have you played Project Octopath? What did you think of it?
