Where do I start with this game? It’s everything I wanted it to be and more! Here’s what I think of Resident Evil 2 so far!
Capcom could’ve done a cheap remaster like they did with Resident Evil 1 and Zero, but they didn’t. They went all in on this game and the end result is possibly the best Resident Evil games ever made. I can go as far as to call this one of the best, if not THE, best horror games ever made. I’m in love with this game. I’ve played through Leon’s campaign and I’m halfway through Claire’s. The tension in this game never lets up. Even on my second playthrough I still get terrified whenever I hear Mr. X’s theme song start playing. I can’t tell you how many times I aimed at a door for 10 minutes waiting for that big mofo to walk through it. Capcom knocked it out of the park with this game.
I came in this game excited because I love Resident Evil and I needed to play a good Resident Evil game after the shit-show that was Resident Evil 7. This game did not disappoint one bit. Mr. X is the highlight of this game. He never stops looking for you and is absolutely terrifying. Leon and Claire are back together again and you can argue that they’re better than ever. There’s no over the top action sequences, explosions ever five minutes, and gunfights with zombies in this game. This is a true survival horror game not a third person shooter and that’s the way Resident Evil should be. I won’t complain if Capcom adds a Raid Mode in the future.
The gameplay isn’t as robust as Resident Evil 6 or Revelations 2, but it’s still really good. I do miss being able to dodge out-of-the-way of an attack and that would be super useful in some segments in this game, but you weren’t able to do any of that in the original game so I understand why it’s not in this one. The game controls very good. The movements are excellent, the gunplay is great, and it’s easier to maneuver Claire and Leon than it was back in the original game. A big reason why is because there are no fixed camera angles this time around. That may not please those old nostalgia addict fans, but I personally love it. The puzzles aren’t bang your head against the wall hard. Most of the time when I encountered a puzzle I didn’t have the piece required to solve and I would have to make a mental not and come back when I did find it.
Solving puzzles are stressful though because you never know when Mr. X will walk up behind you and bitch slap you. Resident Evil 2 is without a doubt the best looking Resident Evil game to date. It’s the goriest too. The zombies in this game look absolutely terrifying. Especially when it’s pitch dark and you can’t see anything past your flashlight beam and all you see is a zombie with its mouth wide open coming towards you. The lighting is excellent and adds so much to this game. The atmosphere is strong here. Really strong and it’s backed by excellent lighting, ambient sounds, and music. It’s perfect. I’m not the saying the game itself is perfect, but Capcom didn’t pull any punches with this game. They delivered something special to us and this game is a strong, strong start to 2019. After I finish Claire’s campaign I want to play through both characters second campaign before I start writing my review.
Resident Evil 2 had some huge shoes to fill and as far as I’m concerned it’s filled them. I prefer this game to the original and I’m very excited to see what the future of this series has in store for us. Now if you’ll excuse me… I have some more ugly ass sewer monsters to run from :).
Have you played Resident Evil 2? What do you think of it?
