How long has it been since I’ve last played a good Sonic game? I was hesitant to buy this game at first, but I’m glad I did. It’s really good so far and I actually want to keep playing it.
As I already mentioned above I was hesitant to buy this game. Sonic hasn’t been good in a long time and I’ve been burned too many times to care at this point. I know my wife is a huge Sonic fan and that played a part in my decision to buy this game over Agents of Mayhem even though I really want that game. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this game. Sega literally took Sonic back to his roots. There’s no 3D bullshit in this game. It’s just good ole 2D Sonic doing what he does best and that’s kick Dr. Eggman’s ass.
The gameplay is your classic 2D Sonic gameplay. The big difference here is the animation quality. Everyone’s animations have been vastly improved over the original 2D Sonic games. And it’s nice to play this game at a constant 60 FPS on my Switch. Most of my play time went to TV mode because my kids wanted to see the game in action. They had fun watching me die over and over on some of the redesigned stages. If you’re a Sonic pro you’re in for a treat because all of the classic stages have been redesigned. The very first boss of the game is the last boss you fight in Sonic 2. The second zone (Chemical Plant) was a nightmare for me to get through because the same glitch from the old Sega Genesis is still present in this game. If I jump while one of the water blocks is coming down towards me I instantly die even though I never actually got squished between them. It’s really annoying, but it didn’t stop me from having fun.
The fast paced gameplay that Sonic has always had is still there and it’s arguably the best it’s ever been in the 2D games. The boss fights (so far) are really interesting and the performance is amazing. I didn’t notice any frame drops or stuttering of any kind. Even when I was going super fast through various different zones. The best part for me is the minigames. My personal favorite minigame from the old Sonic games is here and it’s still awesome to play today. I love the music, I love collecting the blue balls while avoiding the red ones, and I love the controls. It’s absolutely perfect and I can’t wait to play some of the harder mini-games as I continue to advance in the game.
I’m really enjoying Sonic Mania right now. I’m glad I purchased it and it’s worth the $20 investment. That price is perfect for this game.
Have you played Sonic Mania? What did you think of it?
