Lets Talk About Valkyria Chronicles 4!

Spread the Word!

I just finished playing the demo for Valkyria Chronicles 4 and since it’s my first time playing the series I decided to share my thoughts with everyone.

I’ve heard a lot of things about the Valkyria Chronicles games. When I turned on my Switch to play some Salt and Sanctuary I noticed that there was a free demo available for this game. I downloaded it and one hour later I’m sitting here and writing about my experience with the game. Right now I only have one complaint. I hate how stiff the controls are. I feel like this game would play beautifully on PC (if it has mouse and keyboard controls) because I could just click on a unit and move them around instead of struggling with the control stick on my pro controller. That’s literally my only complaint. I really like everything else about the game.

The gameplay is a lot like Xcom. When the stage begins you’ll be staring at an overview of the map. Once you click on a unit you’ll be taken to the actual battlefield and be able to move your character around until you run out of action points. I wasn’t expecting this to happen and it was really cool when it did. I thought I would be looking at icons on the map dry hump each other until one of them ran out of hp. I… struggled a little with the controls on the map. It wouldn’t let me click on the character I was trying to control. I’m hoping this is just a bug that Sega plans on fixing before release. I love the aesthetic. Everything is colorful and beautifully animated. The voice acting is solid so far and I’m really digging the gameplay. I don’t know if there is any type of progression (leveling up, etc) system or if I can upgrade, or buy, new equipment for my units yet. I did like blowing that tank to pieces and I really enjoyed tactically moving my units around in a 3D world. Instead of clicking on a unit and watching them move for me I get to do everything. It’s a nice change of pace from games like Fire Emblem and Xcom, but only time will tell if I enjoy this game as much as I do those two series.

Does this game have permadeath like Fire Emblem and Xcom? Yes, but I don’t know exactly how it works here. In both Xcom and Fire Emblem every unit can be killed off except the main protagonist (Fire Emblem). Is there romance like Fire Emblem? I have a lot of questions, but I like that. I want to go in as blind as possible and just enjoy myself. I think this game just made my “to buy” list. I rarely go out of my way to buy games for $60 and if this game can keep me entertained for a few more hours on the Switch I might just end up buying it. I think I would prefer to play this game on PC though and odds are I’ll be able to buy it cheaper during a sale.

Have you played Valkyria Chronicles? What do you think of it? Are you a newbie like me?

A coworker gave me a copy of Valkyria Chronicles, and while I really like seeing a historical SRPG, I don’t think that type of gameplay is for me. I was able to get past the first battle sequence, but I ate it when a tank caught up to me. I’m always torn when it comes to games like that. I like the story and presentation, but don’t really mesh with the gameplay. Oh well.
