The title pretty much says it all… I’ve been a part of the Windows 10 technical preview for a while now and some dude posing as a Microsoft employee thought I would be dumb enough to give him my money.
Since I’m using Windows 10 that means I have access to my Xbox from my computer. When I tried to log on this morning it signed me in as someone else. I decided to log off and try logging back in, but it didn’t work because Microsoft thought it would be a good idea not to include a account name/password section on the app.
After trying, and failing, multiple times I decided to contact Microsoft directly and solve this issue. I knew it was a bug because it was working just fine yesterday. I called and at first everything was going well. The man I was talking to understood my problem and said that all he had to do was delete the account and put mine in it’s place.
After he put me on hold for a few minutes everything changed. He told me that he had to go through some extra steps and I told him it was okay. He downloaded a program on my PC that “supposedly” found over 900 problems on my PC and he said in order for them to fix it I would need another program.
I said, “what does this have to do with my app not working properly?” He didn’t respond. Instead he said, ” look how many problems you have on your PC. It’s no wonder it’s so slow.”
My PC is never slow. It’s actually the opposite, but I didn’t feel like arguing with him so I told him to just fix my problem. He said,” In order for us to fix your problem you would have to sign up with us. This will give you coverage on virus protection, spyware, and free technical support from us 12 times a year.”
After doing some research I learned that people are posing as Microsoft. They scam people into giving them their credit card info and will actually put malware on your PC. After I learned of this I attempted to call the number again.
If this really is Microsoft I would be talking to a different person every time I call because of traffic right? Every time I called under a difference alias the same two people answered the phone.
Be careful if you’re having a tech problem with Windows 10 guys. People are trying to scam us out of our hard earned cash. I reported the guy to Microsoft and gave them both of the numbers that I found for them.
