Monster Hunter Generations First Impression

Spread the Word!

I finally got my hands on the new Monster Hunter game. I’ve played about three hours so far and here are my first impressions on it.

I’ve never been a Monster Hunter fan. I’ve played parts 3, and 4 and just never got into the series. I’ll admit that I never put much time into them and this is my first real attempt to learn the mechanics, and gameplay of the series.

Generations is a fun game. I enjoyed testing out each weapon and hunting down some monsters for their hides so I could craft myself some better gear to wear, but I don’t really see an improvement over Monster Hunter 4. Maybe it’s the 3DS’s fault because there’s only so much you can do with it or maybe Capcom knows that hardcore Monster Hunter fans don’t care and will buy it anyway.

So far I’ve hunted down some Jaggies, I think that’s the name so don’t kill me in the comments if I’m wrong :), got chased by a big ass monster, gathered a bunch of ingredients, and made my first dung bomb. Fighting the big ass monsters is really cool, but I haven’t beat one yet. They run away before I can finish them off and I’m not brave enough to pursue them yet. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m still a noob at the game, but I’m determined to learn so I know I’ll eventually get better.

I also really like the gameplay. It has a Dark Souls feel to it. I have to manage my stamina in battle while choosing when to attack or defend. It’s really neat and I really want to learn it because I suck right now.

I have nothing, but positive things to say about Generations right now. I’m really enjoying it and I really want to try out the multiplayer. I’ve been playing alone this entire time and I want to see how some teamwork works in this game.

Have you played Monster Hunter Generations? What do you think of it?

I just have a hard time playing Monster Hunter on 3DS. It’s a cramped handheld and I can’t play it for more than 2 hours at a time before my hands want to kill themselves. I never had the circle pad pro add-on for 3DS, and playing with one analog stick felt weird. It was admittedly better when my girlfriend bought one, though. I really just wish they’d do a 3DS *and* a Wii U version side-by-side. That’s my hope with Switch anyway, since it’ll have dual analog and (hopefully) more comfortable to hold.

I like the hunter-style games though, having gotten REALLY in to Toukiden on Vita and Toukiden Kiwami on PS4. Toukiden 2 looks amazing. I picked up God Eater 2, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Glad you’re enjoying this one. I almost picked it up, but since I don’t have one of those fancy New Nintendo 3DS models with the 2nd analog stick, I knew I’d just get irritated and give up lol.

The new 3DS is actually more powerful than the old version. I see where you’re coming from though. The New 3DS, don’t you hate that name? :), is actually the first 3DS I’ve ever owned so I didn’t mind getting it for the extra features and boost in performance.

Monster Hunter is fun, but I can only enjoy it in short burst for now. I’m still trying to get through Dragon Quest before Pokemon releases.

The New 3DS models have the built in right analog stick though. Old standard 3DS and 3DS XL dont, so you had to buy a thing you snap on to add a right analog stick.

I know. You probably don’t have much reason to buy a new one at this point, but I had went a good 6 or 7 years without a handheld console. So when it came time for me to buy one I went with the newer one :).

I recommend it if you don’t mind that little ass control stick on the side. I can’t use it for long because my hands are pretty big and they’ll cramp up using that little pad on the side for too long. Which is why I have such little gameplay time in Monster Hunter Generations.

Off topic, but I really hope we get the new Monster Hunter Stories. It looks really good and I love the turn based combat.Turn based games play better on the 3DS than action games do in my opinion.

TOTALLY agree. Stories looks great. Even without the 2nd analog, my hands cramp so bad using the 3ds.

Same. I have to position my hands a certain way so I can play comfortably, but after two or three hours my hand would start hurting.

Thankfully I don’t have any problems with the Vita. It’s comfortable, dual analog, not top or bottom heavy, and I can play it for hours. Battery life is great too.

I’m really interested in the Vita. Hopefully I’ll have one in January. What are some games you recommend me get for it?

Persona 4 Golden would be #1, without question. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is a really rad visual novel-meets-Phoenix Wright detective game with great characters and villains. If you want to mix it up, you can’t go wrong with cheaper indies like Axiom Verge, Spelunky, and Risk of Rain. I was actually thinking of doing a rundown of my 25 top Vita games.

It really is a stellar handheld, with the only caveat being the expensive-as-fuck proprietary memory cards. You can get away with a mid sized one, but I ONLY buy games digitally and wanted the most space, so I got the 64gb card for nearly $100 =. No regrets, but that’s a hard pill to swallow for new owners.

Thanks! I’ll write these down in my wishlist book :). And before I cough up $100 I would need a list of games to buy. I want to see how much I like the console before I invest that much into a memory card.

I own like 60 Vita games and I’ve yet to come close to filling my card, so I wouldn’t worry about grabbing the 64gb. I’d say grab the mid-sized card and spend the rest on games, haha.

If I just had to pick 5 games, they’d be Persona 4 Golden, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Freedom Wars, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, and Muramasa Rebirth.

Awesome! Glad you’re having such a fun time with Generations. It makes a pretty good first Monster Hunter game, and I definitely had hours of entertainment with it. I even wrote a review on it! Happy hunting!
