I’ve owned Nintendo’s latest console since May and I’ve bought a lot of games on it this year. This is what I think of my newest console.
I love my Switch. It’s fantastic and Nintendo has created something that I’ve always wanted them to create. They made one console for all of their games instead of splitting them between a home console and a handheld. Nintendo’s handhelds have always sold more than their console counterparts. I can argue that’s because their handhelds have always had the better games. The Nintendo Switch is a revolutionary console and I can’t wait for it to realize it’s full potential.
2017 has been a mixed year for me with my shiny new console. I don’t love Breath of The Wild like most Nintendo fans do. I really enjoyed Super Mario Odyssey, but it’s not my favorite Mario game and isn’t anywhere near a 10 for me and I ignored almost every Nintendo Switch exclusive this year and bought a bunch of Indies that I would rather play on the go instead of on my PC. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE my Switch. I use it almost every day. I just don’t really like the IPs that released for it this year. I can’t see myself playing a game like Arms and I’m not into Splatoon. The game I enjoyed the most is Fire Emblem Warriors. I’ve put over 80 hours into it this year. I traded in Breath of The Wild and I haven’t played Odyssey in over a month. I usually play my Mario games forever, but I can’t bring myself to boot this one up again. Another thing I don’t like about my Switch is the lack of apps. I’ve only got Hulu to watch. There’s no Youtube, Netflix, or Virtual Console and we have no idea if we’ll even get the VC back on the Switch.
That’s all of the negative things I have to say about the Switch. Let’s get to the positive :).
I love bringing this thing with me everywhere I go. I love playing games like Cat Quest, Mario Kart, and Disgaea on the go. SRPGs thrive on handhelds and Disgaea 5 is the only SRPG on the Switch right now and it’s fantastic. You can easily get 100 hours from this game in one playthrough. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best port of game ever. I play it with my family regularly and we just have a good ole time. Those aren’t the only games I love on the Switch. Stardew Valley, Cave Story+, Fire Emblem Warriors, Deemo, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Hammer Watch, and Sonic Mania are all great games that I’ve purchased for my Switch this year. I bought more games than that like Pokken Tournament and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. My point is I’ve spent a lot of time on my new console this year and I’m slowly making it my go-to handheld. It’s not there yet because the 3DS has better games like Pokemon, Fire Emblem, and the Bravely series, but next year is going to be huge for the Switch with JRPGs and I think that’s when I’ll retire my 3DS and just focus on my Switch for gaming.
I just realized that I didn’t mention Skyrim in that list of games. You can bet your sweet ass that I’ll be adding my favorite game of all time to my Switch library soon. When? I don’t know, but I know it’ll be there during a drying spell for me. I’ve only owned the Nintendo Switch for 8 months and it’s already my favorite console of this generation. The Xbox One shot itself in the foot by allowing me to buy their games on PC so I got rid of it and I never bothered to buy a PS4. I love handheld gaming and that’s why I’m so attracted to Nintendo’s latest hybrid. I’m so attracted to this thing that I’ve made three separate lists of top 10 games I want to see on it. I want everything ported to this thing so I can play them on the go. I usually hate ports, but I’m begging for them to release on the Switch. If that Dark Souls rumor is true you already know I’m going to rebuy them for the Switch.
My first year of owning the Switch has been great. Yes, it’s had some big disappointments for me, but the good far outweighs the bad and I can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for us.
Do you own a Nintendo Switch? Have long have you owned it? What do you think of it?
