My New Steam Controller Review

Spread the Word!

For the last few days I’ve been enjoying my very first Steam Controller. It’s the weirdest controller I’ve ever owned…

My controller came in a very sturdy box. It’s not as big as it looks. It’s a really tiny box.

I was skeptical about the Valve’s Steam Controller. That’s one of the reasons why I waited for it to go on sale before I brought it. After playing around with it in multiple games I fell in love with it. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite controllers of all time.

Instead of having two control sticks there are two large touch pads on the controller that acts as a mouse in game. The control stick is located under the touch pad and it’s right next to the A, B, X, Y buttons. On the top of the controller are your standard RB, RT, LB, LT triggers, but the awesome really awesome thing about this controller has to be the buttons on the back of the grips. These buttons can do whatever you want them to. I programmed the two back buttons to toggle my console commands and free camera mode in The Witcher 3.

Did I mention that you can customize each button on the controller to work any way you want and that it’s wireless! This is a great feature for strategy games because it lets me map out my controller in a way that’s easy for me to play them. The Steam controller won’t replace my mouse and keyboard for strategy games, but when I’m in the mood to sit back and relax it comes in handy. The dongle that came with the controller works really well. It’s never dropped the signal at all and I can really get used to sitting far from my PC while I game on my TV with it.

I’ve played The Witcher 3, Salt and Sanctuary, Dark Souls 3, Galactic Civilizations III, Mercenary Kings, and Tera. I also briefly played some Fallout 4, but not nearly enough to know how well this controller will handle FPS games. This controller works great on everything I’ve tried on so far and I’m surprised at how well it handled both The Witcher 3, and Dark Souls 3. I didn’t think I would ever get good at moving the touch pad around as a camera, but I did and I’ve been playing The Witcher 3 with this controller ever day. Dark Souls 3 was a bit of challenge for me at first, but once I got the controls down I started kicking ass again so it’s all good.

Another neat feature is the Steam button on the controller. It acts similarly to both the PS4, and Xbox One controllers. If you push the Steam button it’ll take you back to Steam or if you hold it down you can shut your PC off without getting up from the couch. My favorite thing to do is mess around with the settings and change the way my controller sounds when I turn it on or off. I can even name it and that makes it feel more like “my” controller over controllers I’ve owned in the past.

Not everything is great about the Steam Controllers. The only negative that I can really think of is the feel of the controller. It feels kind of cheap. What I mean by that is it’s not very sturdy and one drop could probably break it. I’m not saying that will happen if you drop it, but it’s the impression I get when I hold it. Hopefully Steam releases a newer model, but that’s really my only complaint with the Steam controller.

I’m definitely going to purchase a few more Steam controllers in the near future. I really want to tried some third/first person shooters with it too and I’ll update this review when I do, but for now I can without a doubt recommend everyone that plays PC games to go out an buy this controller. It’s well worth the price in my opinion.

If you want to see the Steam controller in action I’m going to release a video that’ll showcase it in action while I play The Witcher 3. Can you believe I still haven’t started Blood and Wine! I forgot how long The Witcher 3 is, but I’m really enjoying it so I don’t mind going through the grind again.
