My Opinion On The Guild Wars 2 Controversy

Spread the Word!

Can we go one year without another gaming controversy? Nope. I used to be a hardcore Guild Wars 2 player and decided to share my opinion with everyone on what’s happening and whether or not I agree with Jessica Price and Myers (her colleague that none of the gaming outlets reporting on this cares about because he doesn’t have a vagina). Jessica Price was a writer for Guild Wars 2. She blew up at one of the biggest Guild Wars 2 fans and content creators (Deroir) and was eventually fired from ArenaNet. Shortly after she was fired all of this began and everyone has been half reporting what actually happened on Twitter between Deroir and Jessica Price. I’ll start by saying that Jessica Price was wrong for what she said to someone trying to have a genuine conversation with her. She can say whatever she wants to say on the subject it doesn’t change the fact that she blew up on a guy that said nothing wrong to her. Before I go any further here is exactly what was said between these two people.

Jessica Price – “Today in being a female game dev:

Allow me-a person who does not work with you-explain to you how you do your job.”

That wasn’t too bad right there right? She didn’t leave it at that though. We’ll get to that in a bit though. Here’s what Deroir said that triggered her –

Deroir – “Really interesting thread to read! However, allow me to disagree “slightly”, I don’t believe the issue lies in the MMORPG genre itself (as your wording seemingly suggest). I believe the issue lies in the contraints of the Living Story’s narrative design.

He went on for a bit after that, but none of it was “mansplaning” or offensive. He was just attempting to have a normal conversation with her. She was the one that screamed sexism over nothing at all. This is what she had to say.

Jessica Price – like, the next rando asshat who attempts to explain the concept of branching dialogue to me-as if, you know, having worked in game narrative for a fucking decade, I have never heard of it-is getting instablocked. PSA.

Since we’ve got a lot of hurt manfeels today, lemme make something clear: this is my feed. I’m not on the clock here. I’m not your emotional courtesan just because I’m a dev. Don’t expect me to pretend to like you here.

Lets get to my opinion on this shall we?

There was a lot said a few days ago. That’s not half of the shit she wrote on Twitter to everyone. It’s no wonder why she lost her job. You can’t act that way on a public forum when you have a job like that. Many people have lost their jobs for saying less than that. There are obviously people out there that will side with Ms. Price and they have the right to, but screaming sexism because someone had a different opinion than you on a public forum and telling fans of a game that you worked on that you don’t have to pretend to like them is extreme. This isn’t the first time she’s done something like this. The only difference is she was fired this time around because (this is just my educated guess) her employers got tired of dealing with her shit on the job. Deroir even apologized to her for what he said. He didn’t say anything wrong, but he (and everyone else) was really surprised that she blew up at him like that.

All of this negative PR being thrown at ArenaNet for doing their job. Lets reverse the situation. What if it was a man that got fired. The story would be reverse. Everyone would be calling him a sexist and praising ArenaNet for firing him while hoping that he never lands another job in the gaming industry. Just because you have a vagina doesn’t mean you’re entitled to keep your job when you go off the rails when someone critiqued you on something you posted in a PUBLIC forum. If you didn’t want anyone’s opinion on this why would you post it on Twitter of all places. You knew what you were doing and you reacted like a child. I must be sexist because I wrote all of that about a woman right? How dare I give my opinion towards the opposite sex. I’m tired of it all. You deserved to be fired for your actions and I hope you learn from this situation that you created. You put your former coworkers in a really bad place because you wanted some PR attention. It doesn’t matter what ArenaNet does now. It would be in a negative light because you made this about sexism when it’s not.

Everything has to be about sex. Why can’t a man just disagree with a woman without being labeled? Why can’t we all just get along. I’m not saying sexism doesn’t exist. I know it does. I’ve defended my wife from shit like that and even wrote about it. I’ve been a victim of sexism too, but the media would have you believe that only women go through things like that. My point is this isn’t sexism in the slightest. Jessica Price is just an asshole and that deserved to get fired. This is the same lady that had this to say after Total Biscuit passed away after his long battle with cancer.

Karma’s a bitch ain’t it?

The guy who left a comment was super polite. He didn’t deserve that rude response and I don’t get why she tried to make it a gender issue. She deserved to get fired. Like you say, had the roles been revered feminist journalists would have been cheering the male employee being fired for smack talking a female commenter.

That’s exactly my point. This entire controversy is stupid and makes no sense. She was wrong. Period. I would say the same thing if it was a male that did this. It’s not about sexism.

Ugh. People like this make me angry. This “us vs them” crap needs to STOP. We are all equal human beings and should work together. People need to chill and not be so oversensitive about everything. The guy was clearly being civil, and she sounds like the asshat in my opinion, haha. Sigh… I’m glad video games get me away from this planet 🙂

I agree with you. And I’m also glad video games get me away from Earth for a little while.
