Pokemon Top Ten List 4

My Top 10 Favorite Starter Pokemon

Spread the Word!

I’m back! After a short hiatus to get my personal life in order I’m ready to come back and get to work on everything I said I would do in my schedule post. Here are my Top 10 Starting Pokemon!

I already wrote about my least favorite starter Pokemon. You can find that list by clicking here.

10. Turtwig (Pokemon Diamond & Pearl)

I really love Turtwig’s design. He’s adorable and if I’m not using Piplup I’m using him. I love his fully evolved form and dual typing. It’s not very useful for competitive play, but I love going through the regular game with it and I REALLY love the design of all of the Turtwig evolution line.

9. Treecko (Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire/ Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire)

This thing wouldn’t even be on my list if it wasn’t for Omega Ruby. Treecko was always my least favorite of the trio in the old Ruby & Sapphire games. All of that changed when he mega evolved into a dual Dragon/Grass type and got lightning rod too! I’ve wrecked entire teams with this thing online. It’s speed is awesome and the only reason why it’s so low on my list is because it’s still my least favorite starter out of the three.

8. Mudkip (Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire/ Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire)

Mudkip is a beast! Well… not Mudkip, but it’s two evolved forms are. You’ll never struggle if you choose Mudkip as your starting Pokemon in the base game or the remakes. Especially the remakes! Mega Swampert is a tanky, ass kicking machine. Just keep it away from grass types and you’ll be good. I love the design of all three Pokemon, dual typing, and movepool. Swampert is another Pokemon that I’ve swept entire teams with.

7. Totodile (Pokemon Gold & Silver/ HeartGold & SoulSilver)

The only starter worth using in Pokemon Gold & Silver is Totodile. He’s not pathetically weak like Chikorita and Feraligatr kicks all kinds of ass. Teach him Ice Punch and watch him wreck both the 8th gym leader and Lance at the end of the Elite Four. I had both Feraligatr and that red Gyarados on my team the very first time I completed Pokemon Gold when I was a kid. I really, really want a Mega Feraligatr.

6. Charmander (Pokemon Red & Blue/ Fire Red & Leaf Green

And we finally get to one of the original starter Pokemon. Charmander wasn’t always a favorite of mine. He was actually my least favorite when I was kid. That changed some years later and absolutely love both versions of Mega Charizard. Charmander isn’t the best fire starter in my opinion, but I always get nostalgic whenever I see that giant, cuddly lizard.

5. Litten (Pokemon Sun & Moon/ Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon)

I love cats. When I learned that there would be a cat starter Pokemon I instantly knew who I was going to pick for my first playthrough. Litten is so freaking adorable and he’s a badass too. He’s faster than both Poplio and Rowlet and can learn a bunch of different moves. Litten starts off as a Fire type Pokemon and evolves into a Fire/Dark wrestler! What’s not to love about this Pokemon?

4. Froakie (Pokemon X & Y)

The best water starter in all of Pokemon and one of my all time favorite starter Pokemon is Froakie. What makes him so great is the Protean ability. Whatever attack Greninja hits you with he becomes that type of Pokemon. This is a very hard Pokemon to fight against because you never know what tricks people have up their sleeves when they use Greninja. Froakie is adorable, fast, and can hit moderately hard. I’m not a huge fan of Greninja’s tongue obscuring its face like a ninja, but that’s one badass Pokemon that I choose 9/10 when I play Pokemon X or Y.

3. Bulbasaur (Pokemon Red & Blue/ Fire Red & Leaf Green)

2. Torchic (Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire/ Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire)

My life would not be complete with KFC by my side. Torchic is my favorite Fire starter Pokemon and can easily sweep an entire team in competitive play. Torchic started the Fire/Fighting trend that plagued the next two generations after these games, but he’s by far the best Fire/Fighting type of the bunch. He’s adorable, learns some kick ass moves, and his mega form kicks all kinds of ass.

1. Rowlett (Pokemon Sun & Moon/ Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon)

Rowlett does a lot of things for me. It’s a flying type which is a type that I’ve always wanted to start a Pokemon game with and it’s fully evolved form, Decidueye, is a Ghost type Pokemon. For the first time ever we’ve got ourselves a Ghost type starting Pokemon. It’s Z-move looks fantastic, its design is fantastic, and the moves it learns is fantastic. It’s also a well rounded Pokemon. It may not be the best Pokemon for competitive play, but I don’t care. Rowlett is my undisputed favorite starting Pokemon of all time.

And those are my favorite starter Pokemon. Who are yours?

I love that there are two turtle-based starter Pokemon. I am a die-hard Squirtle fan, but that’s mostly because I was practically an infant when the anime and games came out and Squirtle was the cutest one. The nostalgia attached to that adorable little turtle never really died out.

I can totally relate to that feeling :). I was 9 (I think) when Pokemon released and that’s how I get with Bulbasuar :). I love that we finally got a cat starter.

Torterra, Charizard, Feraligator, and Decidueye would definitely make my top 10. I generally like my grass types and then fire type.
