Top Ten Best Games Top Ten List 10

My Top 10 FPS Games of All Time

Spread the Word!

I did a list like this one a few years ago and decided to revise it and make some changes. Here’s my updated top 10 FPS games of all time!

10. Halo 2

I originally left this game off my list, but decided to add it on this time around. Halo 2 was fun back in the day. I have a bunch of memories of me and guys sitting down in Edgar’s living room and playing Halo 2 for hours. It was fun and that’s a big reason why I decided to add it to my list.

9. Metroid Prime Trilogy

All three Metroid Prime games are great. I enjoy these games more than the original ones. I feel like this is the best possible way this series could have evolved into and it made me a fan of Samus. I never cared for her much before I played these games.

8. Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

This is still one of the most unique FPS games I’ve ever played.  Escape from Butcher Bay isn’t all about shooting. You actually go awhile before you can do any of that. At the beginning it’s about stealth and this game does that very well. Sticking my knife in a unsuspecting enemy was glorious and when I finally did get a chance to shoot someone it made the entire game worth it. This game is a classic.

7. Metro 2033/Last Light

I love the Metro games. They’re very atmospheric, creepy, and tell good stories. The gameplay is great, the world design is phenomenal, and I can’t get enough of revisiting this dark world that 4A Games created for us to enjoy. If you haven’t played these games I highly recommend that you do. They’re amazing and I can’t wait to play the third one.

6. Fallout 4

Fallout 4 has been making a lot of my top 10 list lately. I replaced Far Cry 3 with this game. It’s so easy to get lost in Bethesda games. Fallout finally has good gameplay and Fallout 4 has some well written companions. They’re not a Bioware’s level of good, but they’re great compared to what came before them in Fallout 3.

5. Call of Duty Modern Warfare

This is probably the only time you’ll ever see me rank a Call of Duty game over Fallout and Metro. Modern Warfare is a classic and is the best Call of Duty game ever made. I spent way too many hours in the multiplayer in this game and I was pretty good too. My brother, cousin, and I used to play this game all day long. They never did manage to beat me when I geared up as a sniper :).

4. Bioshock Infinite

Bioshock Infinite is amazing. It ticked all of the boxes for me. Great characters, great story, good gameplay, and a great soundtrack too. It’s amazing and I can remember almost every part of this game and it’s been years since I last played it.

3. Borderlands 2

When I think of the FPS genre the first game I think of is Borderlands 2. It’s amazing and it also ticked all of the boxes for me. Story, characters, an AMAZING villain, and a ton of guns. If you want one of the best multiplayer experiences you’ll ever have you need to play this game. It’s not just fun in mulitplayer. It’s a ton of fun playing alone too and I hope Borderlands 3 is as good as this game.

2. F.E.A.R. 2

F.E.A.R. 2’s gameplay is absolutely perfect. It’s absolutely fucking perfect. It plays smooth as butter and it’s creepy as shit too. If I judged this list from gameplay alone F.E.A.R. 2 would easily take the number 1 spot. I just like the next game a little more than this one…

1. Wolfenstein: The New Order

B.J blasted his way back into my heart when this game dropped. This game is so brutal and doesn’t hold back. The story is excellent and so is the gameplay. I can dual wield shotguns, sprint under a Nazi’s legs and blast them where the sun don’t shine. There are some heavy moments in this game as well as non stop action and that’s what I look for in my FPS games. The New Order is the best FPS game I’ve ever played and if you haven’t played it yet you should. It’s fucking incredible.

I’ve never played a Bioshock game. I’ve always wanted to try the series out but have never got around to doing so.

It’s nice to see Metro and F.E.A.R. 2 on the list and very nice to see F.E.A.R. 2 so high up.

I’d have to take 2 out of this list and replace them with DOOM and Shadow Warrior.

Shadow Warrior was so good. I should have at least had it mentioned as an honorable mention. Doom was fantastic. Only reason why I left it off is because of the terrible multiplayer.

Which two games would you take off?

I’d take off Riddick and Bioshock as I’ve not played them. Shadow Warrior is just an absolute blast to play and the humour, yes it’s cheap but it works so well.

As for DOOM I agree that the multiplayer was bad but the single-player is near flawless. Every second of DOOM’s campaign was fun.

I finally played Vermintide btw and I am kicking myself because I wish I played it sooner, it is so damn good. Also I’m going to throw Killing Floor 2 into the mix. I’ve put over 40 hours into it and I will more than likely put in another 40.

Really curious your opinion on Destiny. While my husband plays it, he does so while complaining about it constantly. I feel like we had a conversation about this and that you did not get caught up in the Destiny hype train. I’m not into FPS games and have never been good at them. I like BioShock and others for the atmosphere and story though.

We have talked about Destiny before, but I never went into great detail on why I feel the way I do about it. I’ll try to keep this short :).

Destiny has great gameplay. What I mean by that is that it’s really smooth and fun to play. That’s about all I can really say about it though. I remember how all of my friends were crazy about Destiny and dragged me into it back when I still owned a console. I never enjoyed it as much as them. I reviewed it back then and gave it a 6 and eventually dropped it to a 5.

The Division and Destiny are very similar in what they do. They’re both incredibly repetitive and you’ll be doing the same missions over and over again while trying to get better gear. The difference is that The Division is a squad based cover shooter with better progression, gear, and end game and Destiny has nothing. The customization is terrible, I’m not a fan of the exotic gear grind, and repeating the same strikes lost its appeal to me very quickly.

I never bothered to buy Destiny 2. I would rather wait for Anthem and The Division 2 next year.

Bioshock is amazing and I love that series to death. Epecially parts 1 and Infinite.

I don’t think my husband is going to get Destiny 3 and if he does, I’m going to smack him lol. Not because I give a shit about what he plays, but because he does nothing but complain about how much he hates Destiny while he’s playing it. I can understand putting hours into a game you payed for , but it’s been over a year. You got your money’s worth.

I like games that have an ending, too. While I’m currently playing FF Brave Exvius, there’s still a story going on and it’s mostly free.

Lol. My wife is like that with me and Skyrim. The difference is I REALLY love Skyrim and don’t know when to stop playing when I get into it. I haven’t played it in a month now.

I’m currently playing Ni No Kuni 2 (amazing game btw) and Octopath Traveler. They’re both great and I’m in JRPG heaven right now lol.

There is not a single weak entry in the Metroid Prime trilogy. This is especially noteworthy because apparently, the second game was rushed for Christmas, yet astoundingly, the final product shows no signs of that being the case. If anyone else did that, it would’ve turned out like Sonic ’06.

It’s too bad the quality of the Call of Duty franchise has sunk like a stone because it makes it easy to forget that Modern Warfare is an excellent game. If one is only going to play a single game from the franchise, that’s the one to go with.

I think all 3 Metroid Prime games are excellent. I couldn’t choose between so I put all of them on the list.

Call of Duty used to be an excellent series. It’s just too many of them now and I lost interest after World at War. I think all of the Modern Warfare games are great. I’m more nostalgic about the first one so that ended up on the list :).

That’s fair enough; all three games are definitely winners.

I don’t think it’s just nostalgia talking; I believe the first Modern Warfare to be better than its two sequels. In fact, just playing those games, I could see the decline in the franchise’s quality, going from a simple, yet effective anti-war narrative to something akin to what Roland Emmerich would direct.
