Dragon Age My Recommendations Top Ten Best Games Top Ten List 48

My Top 10 Games of All Time

Spread the Word!

After I tweeted my least favorite games I was asked what my favorite games are, but since I can’t go into great detail on Twitter due to the character limit I decided to make a post with my top 10 games of all time.

I dropped a few games on Twitter on 5 of my favorite gaming series, but I was disappointed with what I came up with because I know those aren’t my top 5 favorite ones. I left out so many that I wanted to add, but after thinking it over I’ve decided to make a official top 10 games of all time list.

This list is subject to change as I continue to play more games, but I doubt it’ll change drastically since a good number of these games are pretty old now.

10. Street Fighter II

Street Fighter II is the best fighting game of all time. I love everything about it and every time a “best of” list comes up I always drop this game as one of my favorites of all time.

9. Fire Emblem: Awakening

One of the best games on the 3DS is also one of the best games of all time. This game saved the Fire Emblem series and also took it in a new direction. This game told one hell of a story, has great gameplay, and a memorable cast of characters.

8. Dragon Age Origins

The first game in the Dragon Age series is the best one. No game came close to topping Origins, but that doesn’t mean the two sequels are bad games. Dragon Age Origins is a masterpiece that I’ve played through more then 30 times.

7. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

When I started thinking my top 10 games of all time I knew this game would be in there somewhere. Symphony of the Night is in a league of it’s own when it comes to Metroidvania games and is still a really great game to play today.

6. Civilization V

Every time I recommend a game on PC to people looking to get into strategy games it’s always this one. It’s easy to get into and hard to put down. The “one more turn” saying started with this series and I can’t tell you how many “one more turn” I gave my wife when she asked me to do something around the house. It’s that good.

5. The Witcher 3

I didn’t always consider The Witcher 3 one of the greatest games of all time. It slowly became on of the greatest games ever made because CD Projekt Red slowly improved it with patches, and DLC. This game has everything I look for in a modern open world game and it’s still the current standard for open world games.

4. Pokemon Sun/Moon

Pokemon Sun/Moon topped Ruby/Sapphire as my favorite Pokemon game of all time. I could easily put just about any Pokemon game here. Gold/Silver, Red/Blue, etc. This one took Pokemon in a new direction and that played a big part on why I placed on it on my list.

3. Super Mario World

This game did two things for me. It has my favorite Nintendo character ever (Mario) riding my second favorite Nintendo character ever. Yoshi was introduced to the world in this game and I love it for that. This game was also the most unique Mario game of it’s time. I love navigating the beautiful world map, collecting power ups, and playing with Mario/Yoshi.

These next two games could easily be number 1. I switch regularly between which one is my favorite.

2. Mass Effect 2

I’ve called this the best game I’ve ever played almost everyday and it is, but for the sake of this list I had to place it at number 2 because when I think of Mass Effect I think of the entire trilogy as one cohesive experience. I’ll probably come back later and swap this with the number one spot :).

1. Skyrim

Skyrim is my most played game of all time. It’s also the reason why I started blogging. I wouldn’t be here writing this list right now if it wasn’t for this game. I’ve played well over 1000 hours of Skyrim, spent late nights modding it, writing short stories about my characters, and writing about it here. It’s the GOAT of open world games and nothing comes close to it’s amazing community and world that Bethesda has built for me to get lost in. I love this game and it’s a easy number 1 for me.

What are your favorite games of all time?

Here’s some honorable mentions.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Dark Souls

Soul Caliber

Phantasy Star II

Bioshock

Bioshock Infinite

Total War Shogun 2

Xcom Enemy Unknown

If I ever make a top 20 all of these games would make the list.

Great list, though I must admit that i’ve not played all of them.
Out of interest, why SFII rather than one of the later iterations? I always ask as it’s II that seems to make every list, and the reasns for that vary from person to person. For example, I’ve known people who just felt that it was more polished than the later games, I’ve known people who found the increased speed of alters ones to reduce the quality of the experiene and so on. For me, it’s a toss-up between II and Alpha 2 as to which I prefer.
Great choice with Super Mario World. That was actually the alst non-spin-off Mario game that I enjyoed (again though, I’ve not played all of them, so have likely missed out on some cool ones).

As to my own top games … trying to narrow it down would take some time. I think that Sonic 3 & Knuckles would likely go in, along with the original Resident Evil. Outside that, I’d really have to sit down and think about it.

SFII was a huge part of my childhood. I spent hours trying to master it so I could beat my older sister at the game and since that was something we had in common, she’s not much of a gamer anymore, it helped us bond. SF2’s slow gameplay is also the best it’s been in the series imo. SF5 has great gameplay, but Capcom really messed it up with their DLC policies. I think it’s a bit of everything you mentioned. It’s more polished, has the perfect speed. and served as a bonding tool for my sister and I.

I’ve played every Mario game and Super Mario World is still my favorite. Super Mario Bros 3 is a close second.

Making a top 10 of all time wasn’t easy. It took me months of thinking and adding/removing games from my list because I had to think of all the games I’ve ever played in my life and which ones were my favorites.

SMB3 was really fun too, gotta agree with you there.
I love the nostalgia I get from SF2, but enjoy the asked if Alpha 2. I haven’t played 5 as yet, because I really wanted an arcade mode, and I don’t believe that’s been added.

Outside of Civ V and Pokemon Sun/Moon, I can’t really disagree with any of your list. I grew up pumping quarters into SF2 and put a ridiculous amount of time in Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers on SNES. I’d put that or Street Fighter Alpha 3 in there, for sure.

I need to redo my top 10. Looking back at it, there are one or two games that need shifted around or booted out. These lists can change on any given day of the week, at least the last two spots.

You’re right about the list changing. Any of the honorable mentions that I posted could easily be in my top 10. If you’re ever in the mood to try out a strategy game Civ V is a great place to start.

I could literally place any Pokemon game on my list and call it the best lol. Sun/Moon changed the formula and actually had a good story so I chose those two :).

When/if you update your list drop a link and I’ll read it again.

And it has nothing to do with nostalgia. If that was the case Symphony of the Night or Super Mario would have been number 1 :). I just like Skyrim more than The Witcher. In the end I love both games, but prefer one over the other.

Lots of quality games on this list. From your top ten I especially like SF2, Fire Emblem, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age. It’s a shame that the recent entries of those Bioware titles haven’t been as good.

I disagree with the recent entries thing on the Bioware games. I loved Andromeda and praised it in my review. And I loved Inquisition too. Just not more than Origins. I still haven’t played through the expansions yet so I might end up liking it more than Origins. It’s not likely, but it could happen :).

Awakening is basically more Origins, which is in no way a bad thing. Really neat story, but not long enough to really grab you. I have far more nostalgia for Origins than Inquisition, but I think I like Inquisition’s cast more. Origins had a better, more coherent story IMO. I’m also with Omar now in thinking Andromeda was fantastic.

Solid list man! I highly approve of Super Mario World in the top 3. And I think your taste in games is awesome! They’re not all my cup of tea, but I’m very familiar with a lot of them being some of the best in their class. I also think Pokemon Sun/Moon, Fire Emblem Awakening, and Symphony of the Night were excellent games. My personal top three is (in no order):

    Super Mario World
    Super Mario 64
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

In other words, 2D Mario, 3D Mario, and Zelda are my favorite games haha.

Thanks! I was tempted to put Ocarina of Time in my top 10. If I ever did a top 20 it would definitely be there :). Super Mario World has aged so well dude. It’s still an enjoyable experience all these years later. I’m currently enjoying the hell out of Odyssey, but it’s too soon to say whether I like it more than Super Mario World or Super Mario 3D World (my second fav).

What would your top 5 Mario list consist of, across all releases?

I think mine would look like:

            Mario 2 USA
            Odyssey
            Yoshi’s Island
            64

I know what the first two are without having to think about them, but the other 3 are just what I can think of right now and will probably change once I started going through every Mario game I’ve ever played.

            Super Mario World
            Super Mario Bros. 3
            Super Mario 3D World
            Yoshi’s Island
            Super Mario Bros. 2

Haha, these things are SO TOUGH to do! I always forget certain games exist, make the list, then hate myself for leaving something out. I think that’s why I named my list something like “10 Games I Happen to Like the Most at This Particular Time” lol.

Great list, though. Lots of real bangers on here and *hi-five* for putting Mass Effect 2 above the others. It’s a damn masterpiece. Seeing DA Origins and Castlevania SOTN on the list made me happy too. I hear ya on Skyrim, too. The further I remove my nostalgia from Morrowind the more I recognize that I liked Skyrim more. Maybe if they remade Morrowind on a new engine or something, but it’s a tough game to go back to nowadays (at least, for me it is — and I spent 300+ hours on the original Xbox version). Can’t go wrong with SF2. I put Street Fighter Alpha 3 at the top of the SF list, but there’s no denying the impact of 2 and its many variations.

I planned on revisiting my Top 10 of All Time list next year, since there’s some serious shuffling going on. I was surprised to see you make a similar post the same day, which motivated me even more.

When I started making this list I had about 20 games I wanted to put on it lol. This list was HARD for me to make. I’ve been considering making a top 50 list and I’ve even started writing some games down in my notebook. I have no idea when/if I’ll ever do it, but I’m having fun just writing shit down in my notebook right now :).

Morrowind… has aged horribly imo, but I still love it to death. I would love to play a remaster of Morrowind someday. Morrowind was my first open world game and it was amazing. I had never played anything like it on the OG Xbox and I’ve put hundreds of hours into it.

Whenever you get around to it feel free to share the link with me. I would love to read your definitive top 10 games of all time :).

I have a Word document that I fiddle around with every so often, where I adjust and readjust my Top 100 lol. I have about 15-20 games written down that I’m forcing myself to play before making a definitive list, but at SOME point I plan on doing a Top 100 released across 10 different posts. I like lists. I can’t help it.

I’m working my way through Morrowind’s quests in ESO with my GF and having a blast. I just love that area and the lore, but I’d *really* like to revisit the original game with modern updates. Mods help on PC, for sure, but it still feels incredibly dated (because it is).

I love making list too. My first priority is to complete a top 10 list for every year that I’ve been gaming. My last one was the top 10 games of 1995. I plan on doing a list for every year. Since I’m much older now I appreciate some of the more advanced games now than I did when I was kid.

Morrowind is one of a kind. Bethesda made one hell of a game that was filled with content. Morrowind has interesting quest, lore, characters, locations, and levitation. I miss levitating :(. I would love a Morrowind remaster, but chances are we’ll get another Skyrim first :).

Great list. A lot of my favourite games there too. Dragon Age: Origins really ruined me for a lot of games for a long time. It was probably the most emotional game I’d played up to that point and afterward I was all about games with STORY. I played it through about 17 times? Then I moved on to Mass Effect, playing 1 just before 2 came out. I kinda hated 2 the first time I played it. I was so angry the whole time. Then 3 came out (which is my fave, btw) and after playing it, I started the trilogy again from the beginning. That whole story has impact, you know? I don’t know if BioWare can really equal it.

I have played the other Dragon Age games and Andromeda and they’re all fun, Inquisition is even epic, but they’re not quite the same experience as the more tightly focused Origins or the story of ME1-3.

Witcher 3 is awesome. That was my game of the year in 2016. I played Blood and Wine this year and it’s an amazing epilogue. I’ve heard they’re doing a new game and I’m sort of wondering what they can do next, to be honest. I mean, there’s so much more story in that world (have you read the books?) but I felt like Geralt kind of deserved to retire after this one. 😉

Civ, yep. All the Civs have sucked months out of my life.

I still visit my houses in Skyrim. And sometimes trawl through Blackreach, which is my favourite zone. Same with DA:O. I must have played through the Deep Roads at least 40 times with different teams.

Every play console games? If you like story focused games, you should check out The Last of Us and Horizon: Zero Dawn. 🙂

I feel the same way about Dragon Age: Origins. It ruined a lot of other games for me because it was so good. The story it told was epic, the characters were amazing, and the ending is one of the best endings in all of gaming to me. I’ve played through that game about 40 times since it’s release. I’m actually playing through it again right now. I’m going through the game with an Arcane Warrior.

Dragon Age Inquisition is so good. It’s not a masterpiece like Origins, but it’s a lot better than II was and I still need to go back and finish those DLCs I keep putting off. Andromeda is much better than people made it out to be. I really enjoyed it and it made my top 10 this year. I would love to see where a sequel would take this game, but EA had other plans for the series unfortunately…

The Witcher 3 is a masterpiece to me. I love the books (even though the author is an ass) and it’s pretty much the perfect open world game to play. It has a strong story, good gameplay, and amazing characters.

I’ve played Skyrim a lot. It’s my favorite game of all time. I originally played through it on console. I’ve only been a PC gamer for about 5 years. The only consoles I own are Nintendo consoles. I have a Switch, Wii U, and 3DS. I got rid of my X1 a few years ago and I never bothered to buy a PS4 because I hate the controllers and I’m not really interested in the exclusives it has. I have played The Last of Us (on PS3) and I don’t feel like most people do about it. It was okay, but cliché to me. Horizon Zero Dawn looks really good, but I don’t own a PS4 and I doubt I ever will at this point.

      Thanks for commenting :).

Dragon Age Origins is a truly fantastic game. There are a handful of games where, when it is all said and done, I feel emotional spent and satisfied, and Origins is one of those games. I need to play it again, its been a long, long time.

I’m enjoying my second play through of Skyrim right now, playing the SE version with several mods loaded. It has been fun visiting Skyrim again.

The first three Thief games, for PC, would definitely be (as a group) on my list of favorites of all time, as would the Dishonored games, which are the closest current equivalent to me. The second is my favorite of the group.

I would include the last three Fallout games as a group too.

As far as much older games, I would have to add Galaga and Mario 64. I’d love to have an arcade version of Galaga in the house. Don’t have that kind of money to spend on frivolity. 🙂

I agree with Origins. It’s a true masterpiece and games like that don’t come around very often. Enjoy your second playthrough of Skyrim dude :). After I’m done with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 I’m going back to Skyrim. I’m considering it on the Switch so I can take it with me.

Fallout is a great series and I considered adding 3 to my list, but dropped to a top 20 game :). I don’t remember Galaga :). I was really young when I last played it.

I’ve only played one Thief game and the first Dishonored game. I’ve heard nothing but great things for the Thief series. I need to play the older ones.

I’m 49, and a big thing to do as a kid was to go to the mall and go to the arcade. Galaga was one of those games that early on I got the hang of and could actually make a quarter last a long time, as opposed to other games that just seem to eat my quarters and not provide much enjoyment.

In my mind it is a good problem to have games drop out of one’s top 10 and still be games that are loved. It means they keep making good games. Hope there are many more for 2018.
