2019 was filled with gaming disappointments for me and I played a LOT of bad games this year. I’ve compiled a list of the worst of the worst and put them down below for everyone to disagree with me on.
10. Vambrace Cold Soul
Vambrace Cold Soul has very interesting lore and a great aesthetic, but horrible combat, UI and it’s hard for the sake of being hard because it’s a popular trend these games for games to be really hard. It tried to be a unique version of Darkest Dungeon and it sort of achieved that goal. It’s just… not a really good game in comparison to Darkest Dungeon. My Vambrace Cold Soul review can be found here.
9. Pokemon Masters
Nintendo’s big Pokemon game for phones this year is Pokemon Masters. Its focus is on competitive battles while Pokemon Go is more about collecting Pokemon. Pokemon Masters is pay to win and has a very, very small roster of Pokemon and most of them don’t even evolve. It’s horrible, but I knew that going in and that’s why it’s not higher on my list. My Pokemon Masters review can be found here.
8. A Knight’s Quest
The only thing that A Knight’s Quest has going for it is that it’s pretty and can be genuinely funny at times. Other than that it was a complete chore to play through this game. The gameplay is horrible, the puzzles are stupid, and the only saving grace was the platforming sections that were few and far between. A Knight’s Quest is possibly the worst Zelda clone I’ve ever played. You can find my review of A Knight’s Quest here.
Remilore had interesting looking screenshots so I ended up buying the game for $20 on the Switch. It would turn out to be one of the worst gaming decisions of 2019 for me. The only time I sort of enjoyed myself playing this game was when I played it with my kid. The co-op is half-assed though and the gameplay is mind-numbingly stupid. I couldn’t put this game down fast enough after I finished and I even reviewed it. You can find it here.
6. Kingdom Hearts 3
I know I’m probably about the piss off the entire Kingdom Hearts community here, but… this game sucks. I never liked this series. I completed the first game way back when and got about halfway through the second one. It was terrible then and it’s terrible now. Kingdom Hearts 3 is boring, has terrible gameplay, characters, and the pacing is all over the place. You’ll never be able to convince me that this series is good and I was tempted to place this game higher, but it got beat by some really bad games. I never reviewed this game because I never finished it, but I did write a first impression of it. You can find that here.
5. Destiny 2
Destiny 2 re-released this year as a free to play game and it’s somehow worse than the standard Destiny 2 was that released. I felt like I was playing as someone else’s character because my old one was wiped and replaced by a maxed level 50 character at the old max light level. Veterans of the series loved that and people like me hated it because I felt like there was nothing for me to work towards in the game once I started. I quickly grew bored of it and quit about 9 hours later. I’ll just go back to Warframe.
4. Death Stranding
Hideo Kojima is not only an asshole he’s also one of the most overrated game developers of all time. His “genius” in this game has you playing as a UPS delivery man making deliveries across a desolate America. Except… It’s not really America because America doesn’t look like that. Death Stranding has average gameplay, nonsensical Kojima story, and a poorly designed open world with very little to do in it. I briefly played this game and watched about 25 hours of it on Twitch and it was boring on both accounts. I’ve never been a Kojima fanboy and I knew going in that this game would be exactly what I thought it was. An overrated piece of shit. What do I know though? I’m just a stupid American.
3. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
I really, really, really wanted to like this game. It’s Star Wars and that used to mean something to me before EA took over the games and Disney butchered the films. It’s a shadow of its former self and this game did not make me believe in it again. Just because this game is better than the two games that came before it doesn’t make it good. This game plays like a B, or even C, grade Dark Souls. It mixed so many different games in it that it doesn’t really play better than any of them. And this is coming from a guy that loves the Respawn Entertainment. I love this developer and they completely dropped the ball here. Jedi Fallen Order is one of the worst Star Wars games I’ve ever played in my life.
2. Warhammer Chaosbane
This was my number 1 game going into this list. I changed my mind at the last minute because at least this game feels like a finished product. A shitty finished product, but at least it’s playable from beginning to end. This game was compared to games like Diablo and Path of Exile because it’s in the same genre. The difference is this game would have possibly been good if it released 10 years ago. Everything about it is poorly executed. None of the characters are interesting, the moves that you perform look bad when compared to games that released before this one and only one or two of them are actually useful. Add in a poorly designed loot system and you’ve got Warhammer Chaosbane. This game is terrible and the fact that the developers tried scamming people out of $50 helped push this game up higher than it would have been on my list if it was like $20.
1. Everreach: Project Eden
Project Eden feels like an early access game that was released as a full game. This game is borderline broken and no one should buy it. It’s absolutely terrible and I don’t think hiding behind excuses like “they’re a small Indie developer” is fair because small Indie developers have released some fantastic games over the years and it’s not fair to them to let these people use excuses like that. The gameplay, story, and everything else is total dogshit in this game and when I really sat down thought about this game it was the worst game I’ve played this year by far. Nothing came close to the dumpster fire that is Everreach: Project Eden.
And that wraps up my top 10 worst games of 2019! What are yours?
