My Top 10 Zombie Games of All Time Revised

Spread the Word!

Four years ago I wrote a list called my top 10 zombie games of all time. Well, a lot has happened since then and I thought it would be a good idea to revisit this list. Here are my revised top 10 zombie games of all time!

Original List:

Dead Rising

Resident Evil

Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Dead Island Series

Left 4 Dead Series

Zombie Army Trilogy

Resident Evil Zero

Plants vs Zombies

Zombi U

Resident Evil 5

That’s what my list looked like 4 years ago. Here’s my updated list.

10. Resident Evil

No zombie list would be complete without Resident Evil on it. This game is the grandfather of survival horror games and is one of the best horror games ever made. The zombies felt terrifying in this game. You couldn’t kill hordes of them with jacked up action stars and huge explosions. Zombies could take more hits, come back from the dead, again, and chase the ever-living shit out of you. This game is a classic.

9. Dead Island Series

The Dead Island isn’t what I would call a great series, but they’re damn fun. Nothing beats grabbing whatever is next to you and popping a zombie’s head off. You can upgrade your gear, level up, and do various side quest for people while fighting through a horde of zombies. Some times you’ll even fight bosses and completely different zombies. You can drive in this game too and that adds a whole new way to play. This is one series I can wholeheartedly recommend for a few hours of fun with your friends or family.

8. Plants vs Zombies

I’m not writing about those weird third-person multiplayer shooter Plants vs Zombies games. I’m here to write about the ORIGINAL Plants vs Zombies game. The one that had you choosing which plants to place in front of your house to defend you from the horde of zombies making their way to your front door to eat your brains. This game is fantastic and it’s a shame that we might not ever get another one like it. Instead, someone had the bright idea to turn this game into a shooter and while those games aren’t bad they’re a far cry from being what I would consider one of the best zombie games of all time. Plants vs Zombies had interesting levels, plants, and gameplay. If you’ve never played this game I highly recommend that you do.

7. Call of Duty World at War

I’m not a Call of Duty fan, but I did enjoy some of the older games in the series. World at War introduced the world to the popular zombie mode that’s still in Call of Duty games today. I must have sunk dozens of hours into just this mode alone when this game first released. Boarding up windows to prevent zombies from overwhelming your team was intense and a lot of fun. This mode was the best part of the game and I’m one of those people who used to play Call of Duty for the campaign and even I was impressed with how much fun the zombie mode in this game was.

6. Left 4 Dead Series

What zombie game list would be complete without adding Left 4 Dead to it? Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 are both fantastic games with a lot of depth and a great community. People still play these old ass games today and you can’t blame them. These are two of the absolute best multiplayer games ever made and it’s so much fun working together to take down a horde of zombies. It sucks that we’ll most likely never get a Left 4 Dead 3 because Valve doesn’t really make games anymore, but we can all love the memories we’ve had with our friends playing the two games that we do have.

5. Dead Age.

We’re in the top 5! You may not even know what Dead Age is. It’s a turn-based zombie game that tasks us with surviving the zombie apocalypse with a group of random people. You have to scrounge for supplies, accept a quest from NPCs, find more survivors to help bolster your defenses and fight zombies in good old-fashioned turn-based combat. This game is a lot of fun and is probably the most unusual game on this list because it’s not an action or horror game. It’s basically a survival RPG and it’s really good and cheap on Steam. If you love zombie games like I do you’ll be doing yourself a disservice by not playing this game.

4. Dying Light

This game has the potential to top the list. I’ve never played any of the DLC for this game. This game is here only for the base game and the truth is I have no excuse on why I haven’t played the DLC yet because I’ve heard that it’s really freaking good and I’ve been meaning to play it. Then again, I no longer own an Xbox One and that’s where I bought my copy of Dying Light. This game is, like the other multiplayer zombie games on this list, is best played with friends. It’s so much fun and the things you can do in this game borders on insanity. It’s like Dead Island and Mirror’s Edge had a baby and this game popped out. You can level up, find gear, upgrade your gear, and do these crazy traversal maneuvers that you could do in Mirror’s Edge. The only difference is the gameplay here is actually good. Running from a horde of zombies at night is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had and I’m still mad at myself for not playing through the DLC.

3. Zombi U

Zombi U is one of the best games on the Wii U. I could have placed the PC or PS4 port here, but, in my opinion, it’s more immersive on the Wii U than any other platform. The PC port of Zombi isn’t the best and was lazily put together. This game is meant to be played on the Wii U. Slowly walking through a dark parking lot while trying to look for ammo or something to use as a weapon is intense. You can easily get surrounded and killed by zombies in this game and then you have to start all the way from the beginning, find your corpse, kill it, and then take your loot back. This game is so good and deserves more attention than what it received on the Wii U.

2. Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Resident Evil 2 is the best survival horror game ever made and the best remake ever made. Capcom put some love in this game! Mr. X is a truly terrifying foe and I don’t think I’ve ever seen more realistic zombies in a game in my life. This game is absolutely perfect and if you’re a fan of zombies or horror games, in general, you should buy it. It’s really good, stays true to the original and has great gameplay too. Managing your limited resources is fun and getting bitch slapped by Mr. X is will probably make your heart leap from your chest. It’s that good.

1. Resident Evil 5

Yes, Resident Evil 5 is the best Zombie game ever made. It’s the best co-op game ever made too. Resident Evil 2 may have surpassed this game as my new favorite Resident Evil game, but it’s by no means a better zombie game to me. Teaming up with my brother and beating this game over, and over, and over again was a fantastic experience. Fighting various different zombies with horrifying abilities and not having to deal with Sheva was a real treat. Upgrading my guns, unlocking infinite ammo, playing the fantastic mercenaries mode, speedrunning this game in under an hour, and getting every single achievement on the Xbox 360 was fantastic. Resident Evil 5 is fantastic and I don’t care who disagrees with me. It’s the best zombie game ever made and was an easy choice for me to make because no other game on this list came close to the excellence of this game.

And that wraps up my top 10 favorite zombie games of all time! Do you like zombies? What are your favorite zombie games? This new list turned out a lot different from the one I wrote in 2015 didn’t it?

I see Resident Evil, I see Plants VS Zombies.

    I like.

But in all seriousness, Resident Evil 2 was quite literally a game breaker. I enjoyed the demo a lot and am considering purchasing it. Is it really as good as they say it is?

Resident Evil 2 is one of the few games that maxed my scoring scale. I reviewed the game earlier this month and loved every minute of it. I double dipped and bought it on PC too and I’ve already completed it twice there. It’s the best Resident Evil game ever made and if you like survival horror games I think I’ll really enjoy it.
