My Ultrawide Monitor Has Spoiled Me…

Spread the Word!

I have been spoiled. For the last few weeks, I’ve been enjoying my new LG ultrawide monitor with IPS and HDR. My games run at 2560 x 1440p and it’s glorious. The extra screen space is excellent for both gaming and editing and I don’t think I can go back to a normal display after being spoiled rotten by my new baby.

I purposely held off on playing Doom Eternal until my new monitor arrived at my house. I had to wait 3 weeks for it to arrive and it was worth the wait. I completed Doom Eternal in 15 hours and I’m currently working on a review for that game. I’ve also played a crapload of Warframe, The Division 1 (and 2), Deep Rock Galactic, God Eater 3, Monster Hunter World (that game is a real beauty at 21.9 btw), and Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris. Every game I named except God Eater 3 works at 21.9 aspect ratio and 2560 x 1440p resolution.

After gaming on this monitor for 3 weeks I can’t see myself going back to a smaller screen. I’ve been spoiled and I love it. At first, I was concerned that my aging GPU wouldn’t be able to handle a higher resolution than 1080p. Not only was I proven wrong I was shocked that I was still getting over 90 fps to boot in just about everything I played. My monitor is also aesthetically pleasing to my eyes.

My games look better than they ever have on my old 24-inch Sceptre monitor. And I used to think that a 24inch display was big because I was coming from a 17.3-inch laptop screen before that. I bumped my display up to 29 inches and I have still had plenty of room on my 55-inch Vanspace gaming desk. My favorite part of my setup isn’t even any of my toys. It’s the cupholder that came with the desk. I don’t have to worry about spilling anything on my keyboard or anything else around me. It sits within arms reach of me. I’m getting off-topic here though.

If you’ve never gamed at ultrawide resolution it’ll be hard for me to explain the differences between it and your average 16.9 display. The easiest way I can think of is the width of my monitor. I can see more stuff around my character in-game than I could with a smaller screen. You might say, “well duh that’s because your screen is bigger!” That’s not entirely true though. Most games run at your standard 16.9 resolution and that’s perfectly fine, but if you have the display for it you can bump that up to 21.9. This stretches out your display and shows more around you than your standard 16.9-inch display ever could. Even gaming on a 55 inch TV didn’t’ give me the kind of experience I this 29-inch ultrawide monitor did. I kind of regret settling for 29 inches. I could’ve gone with 32, but I thought that was overkill. I’m addicted to this thing.

The bump in resolution really showcased this to me and I really like the way the HDR works here too. It’s honestly better than my TVs weak HDR. Some games look absolutely breathtaking with HDR and some look worse. It depends on the game, but I think I got my money’s worth out of this thing already. I know Doom Eternal looked incredibly with HDR and so does Destiny 2. Well… most areas in Destiny 2 look really good while the reds are really, really ugly in my opinion.

My new display also has multiple HDR options for me to choose from. I can even activate HDR from my display settings on my desktop or simulate HDR on games that look ugly with it activated. That’s how I’m currently playing Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris and it looks really good. Everything is a bit darker and sharper looking.

I know I’ve written a lot about this already so I’ll close with this. I didn’t know what I missing and now that I do know I don’t think I’ll ever go back to your standard 16.9 monitors. It really is a huge difference and not only did it make my gaming experience better it also makes editing a breeze. I’m glad I made the switch. I even kept my old monitor just in case I didn’t like the ultrawide display. Now, I’m using that as the monitor to our second PC out in the living room while I keep the fancy one for myself.

Have you ever gamed on an ultrawide display? Are you as in love with it as I am? You can let me know here, Twitter, or Facebook. If you enjoyed reading this would you consider subscribing to Pete’s Corner?

I’m obsessed with the ultra wides, yet do not have one yet. I got a new QHD 27″ curved monitor, and while I can now never go back to a flat monitor, the curved ultrawides are EXPENSIVE! Still waiting on a sale for a Dell or an LG but they rarely do go on sale so…

I work from home (before the pandemic as well as during) so writing code is nice to have a super wide monitor. The curved ones are just soo good for everything. Is your LG curved?

That screen looks mighty cool! šŸ™‚ Wish I could have gone the Ultra-wide route for my monitor too (were out of my price range then) but a big screen with a good resolution really goes a long way to making your computer time more comfortable.
