Pokemon Needs To Innovate

Spread the Word!

Pokemon has been around for a long time and it’s had a ton of success, but I think it’s time for a change.

Pokemon doesn’t sale like it used to. It still sales millions of copies and still has millions of fans all around the world, but how long is it going to refuse to innovate? How long is it going to stay the same before it changes it’s formula?

You already know what to expect in every new Pokemon game. You start off as a 10 year old kid and your goal is to catch all the Pokemon, challenge the Pokemon League, and beat whatever ridiculous new bad guy that Nintendo can come up with.

It’s literally been the same since Pokemon released back in the 90’s. They’ve added some new features, like online play and mega evolution, but the core concept of the games never changed. I can understand why people in Japan are more into Yo Kai Watch because it’s newer than Pokemon and it hasn’t had a chance to get stale yet and hopefully it never does.

Pokemon Reborn did a lot of good things in Pokemon in my opinion. It gave us a brand new, dark atmosphere, let us play as grown ups, and the whole game itself felt different, but similar. What if we had a Pokemon game that let us choose our path? What if we didn’t want to win 8 gym badges and battle in the Pokemon League. What if we wanted to be a Pokemon breeder or just wanted to compete in contest. What if we wanted to be a gym leader. What if we don’t want to be 10 years old? What if we want a dad for once!

All of those things could be implemented in Pokemon and it would be so much better if they were. Pokemon has no end game. At the end of Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire we got did the whole Delta episode and unlocked the battle tower, but that was literally it. There’s never enough to do after I complete a Pokemon game. I usually just start all over again, but I’m getting a little tired of doing that. Pokemon X&Y were… okay Pokemon games.

They let us customize our main character, but we were still only 10 years old and it was the easiest Pokemon game ever made. It’s also one of the worst Pokemon games I’ve ever played. I did not enjoy Pokemon X&Y at all.

I’m a little worn out on Pokemon at this point. I love my Omega Ruby to death and I know I’m to playthrough it many more times, but I want something different to happen in the future.

I’ve been nominated for game blog of the year by Bytes that Rock and I would really appreciate your vote. You can click here to vote for me.

Pokemon (and some other Nintendo games) are guilty of rehashing the same formula over and over. As long as the sales are decent the creators will continue to play things safe and not change anything too drastically.

You’re right. And it’s a shame that it happens so often.
