Pokken Tournament First Impression

Spread the Word!

Do you like Pokemon? How about Tekken? If your answer is yes to both of those questions you’ll love this game.

I finally got my hands on Pokken Tournament and I fell in love with the game after my very first match with Pikachu. This game is fantastic and plays beautifully. When I first saw this game I wasn’t impressed with the graphics, but most streams that I watched were of poor quality.

Now that I’ve had about six hours of play time I think the graphics look really good. I don’t think we’ve ever seen Pokemon, maybe except for Super Smash, look this good on the big screen.

The gameplay is where this game shines. If you’re tired of Super Smash or just want something different to play I recommend trying this game out. The gameplay is fantastic and it doesn’t have a steep learning curve at all. After a few matches I was chaining combos together with ease. What I really love about Pokken Tournament is how different every Pokemon plays. Charizard can kill you on the ground or up in the air, Machamp will punish you if let him start pulling off combos with his massive arms, and Pikachu is so fast that you’ll have trouble keeping up with the little guy.

My favorite, by far, is Gengar. Learning Gengar’s moveset took about an hour, but once I did I destroyed everything that dared face me in battle. His ultimate move is the best ultimate move I’ve seen in all fighting games and his tricky moveset can destroy anyone that’s not prepared for it online.

So far the story is complete shit, but I was expecting that since this is a Pokemon game. The voice acting is also really bad with the human npcs, but the Pokemon themselves sound fantastic.

Pokken Tournament is really good so far, but it’s not perfect. I’ll go deeper into everything in my review so be sure to check back for that.

I played the arcade version while I was in Japan. I freaking love it on this but I hope it does port well onto the WiiU.

It plays great on the Wii U and I’m using that big ass gamepad too.
