Power Rangers Review

Spread the Word!

Power Rangers wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I actually liked it, but it does have some serious flaws.

I didn’t go see Power Rangers in the theaters. I’m not a huge Power Rangers fan anymore. Haven’t been since I was a child, but I was curious about it. After going more than a year without watching movies of any kind I took a break from gaming. During that break, I watched Batman V Superman, Logan, Dr. Strange, and a bunch of other movies that I never got around to watching. I even reviewed a few of them.

I’ve heard mixed things on Power Rangers. Some people I know said it was okay while others completely trashed the film. The truth, for me anyway, is somewhere in the middle. At times it can be a good film and other times it’s an average one. When the kids became Power Rangers and starting kicking ass it was good, but the special effects and acting leave much to be desired. I wasn’t expecting quality acting from anyone in this film. It’s a Power Ranger movie and none of the TV shows or movies have good acting at all. They’re cheesy grade B action flicks that can be enjoyed by the family. That’s kind of what this is, but without the action. There’s a good fight scene at the end, but there’s nothing before that. It’s just a bunch of teenage drama that I’ve seen a hundred times already. The only difference is I actually liked getting to know everyone. I like how we have a lesbian yellow ranger and how the blue ranger is a major dork with autism.

I like how the red ranger has to grow into his leadership role and how he had to earn the trust of his team. I like that they had to get to know each other so their powers would work. What I didn’t like were the plot and Goldar. What the fuck did they do to poor Goldar? Rita was fine, but Elizabeth Banks wouldn’t have been my first choice for her. She did fine and I enjoyed the Krispy Kreme scene. I think the actors that were chosen to play the Power Rangers are good and I think they’re the best actors/actresses the series has ever had. I would put the ones we have in this film over the original 6 we had in the first movie. Whoever thinks different is probably thinking back with rose tinted glasses with a giant cup of nostalgia on the side. The characters actually have personality this time around.

I actually liked Alpha and Zordan. That’s something that was near impossible in the original Power Rangers. The origin story actually made sense and I liked how Zordan’s goal wasn’t for these kids to save the world, but for himself to do it by coming back to life. We got a glimpse of the old Zordan later on, but I liked the layers that were shown here. Zordan didn’t want to be trapped in a wall. He wanted to get out and kick some ass. Who wouldn’t?

I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would. It’s a B movie with a ton of potential to get better. The Power Rangers are likable, and origin story is out of the way. Let’s get to the good stuff now, shall we?

I’ve not seen this yet, though I intend to get around to it. I remember catching the first trailer and thinking, ‘Isn’t this The Breakfast Club?’.
