Sonic Mania Review

Spread the Word!

Sonic Mania has revitalized Sonic! It’s actually pretty good and it’s the breath of fresh air this series has needed for years.

The Great:

Graphics:

Sonic Mania returns Sonic to it’s 2D glory. I played this game on the Switch and it looked great in both handheld mode and on the big screen. It looks better in handheld mode and I had the most fun playing it that way too since I could just sit back, relax, and play before going to bed every night.

Sounds:

This game mixes so many classic Sonic tracks together. Everything sounds great. My favorite tracks are Emerald Hills, Flying Battery, and the Oil Ocean zones. All of those stages have been remastered beautifully and can be a real pain in the ass to complete too. I thought I was going to breeze through this game. I was wrong, but I’ll get more into that in the gameplay section.

Mini Games:

The fun as hell mini game from the classic Sonic game is in Sonic Mania. I love collecting the blue balls while avoiding the red ones. It’s fun and the music is catchy as hell. That tune was stuck in my head for days and I found myself humming the song out loud as I cleaned the kitchen. Mini-games never do that to me. I usually avoid them in games, but I wanted to complete them all in this one.

Boss Fights:

The bosses in this game are awesome. I was very surprised when Dr. Eggman used his end game suit on the very first stage. My mouth dropped and… I died painfully as he steamrolled me before I figured out how to damage him. Every boss fight is unique and challenging in some way and I really enjoyed that about this game.

Auto Save System:

Sonic finally has a auto save. I don’t have to start over from stage 1 when I lose all my lives like in previous games. I can quit my game and load up the stage I was doing with no problems and I love it!

Performance:

This game runs at a silky smooth 60fps at all times. I never experienced any stutters or frame drops during the most intense moments in this game on my Switch. This is how you optimize games!

The Good:

Gameplay:

The big problem with the gameplay in this game is the platforming segments. Sonic performs best when it’s going super fast. When the action slows down and I’m forced to platform like a Mario game it’s really clunky and it’s not fun. Jumping is really floaty and I’ve died a few times because I didn’t think I would jump so high or low and end up missing my mark. The underwater stage (while unique) is guilty of this. I did not enjoy navigating it at all.

The Bad:

Same Old Bugs From Previous Sonic Games:

Do you remember the Chemical Plant in Sonic 2? Remember when you’ll jump and instantly die by touching a column on the way down even though you weren’t in any danger of being squished? That’s still in this game and it’s still annoying as hell. The Chemical Plant is still a really awesome stage, but I can go without that happening to me again.

The Verdict:

Sonic Mania is a damn good time. It’s the throwback game old school Sonic fans has been wanting for years and it definitely delivered. I love this game and highly recommend it to all Sonic fans.
