The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III First Impression

Spread the Word!

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III just released and it took me hours just to get the game to run. That’s not a good way to start a new game. Van Helsing III is a bug fest right now. I had to do a work around just to get my game to run. Neocore Games are trying to figure out the problem, but for those of you that can’t even get into the game you can read my steps here. Now that I’ve gotten that out the way lets get to this first impression of The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III.

When I finally booted up Van Helsing III I was treated to a very beautiful opening theme song at the main menu. I’m not surprised that I liked it because Neocore Games tend to have amazing soundtracks in their Van Helsing games. The first thing I tried to do was import my character that I worked really hard on building up from Van Helsing 1, and 2. Unfortunately you can’t import your previous character into this game and that really confuse me because I imported my character from Van Helsing 1 to 2. I don’t understand why Neocore games decided to get rid of the character import system. Why have us go through all the trouble of farming epic gear just to make all of our hours in previous games not matter.

Whatever character you choose to import to Van Helsing III will be a level one. The only thing you get for your trouble is a stupid ring that has shitty enchantments on it. I really want to love Van Helsing III, but i’m really pissed off at it right now. I loved both previous games and I’m finding it really hard to jump into part 3 because of all the changes. I like the revamped skill trees, but I hate the new potion mechanic. Instead of buying potions they went the Dragon Age Inquisition route and decided to give us a single potion that you can use repeatedly after cooldown. The problem with that is it takes forever for it to cooldown.

The six new character classes all look really cool and so far I’ve tried two of them and for the most part I like them, but the three main classes from previous games don’t exist anymore. The classic Van Helsing, also known as a hunter, is gone. The warrior/ranger hybrid has been replaced by the bounty hunter class and that class only specializes in long range combat. If you want to be a warrior you’re forced to be this heavy armored tank that has a sword and shield so those of us that decided to go through the game as classic Van Helsing got screwed over.

The gameplay is still awesome though and I had fun playing as a elementalist, but I couldn’t help feeling the disappointment while playing because I have a level 60 Thaumaturge in Van Helsing II that I can’t use. Neocore Games have done a really good job keeping the gameplay fresh.

The banter between Lady Katarina and Van Helsing is still there, but I feel like it was done better in previous games. I’m only an hour in right now though so I expect that to change as I keep playing.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III is a mixed bag for me right now. I love the gameplay, and improved skill tree, but I hate the single health/mana potions, bugs, and lack of imported characters. Hopefully the game will get better as I progress, but I won’t forgive Neocore for taking out my character class and all of the hard work I’ve invested into this series. I guess that ring was supposed to make up for that. Guess what… it didn’t.

Definitely does sound quite annoying to be forced to essentially be another person for no good reason. Especially if you can’t even choose the type you wanted either. It almost sounded like this was a Van Helsing game that you couldn’t actually play as Van Helsing…

His classic character model is there, but they took away his melee fighting ability and just have him as a ranged character. To make things worse every time I die I see a spectral form of my character from Van Helsing II. Every that happens I get pissed off…
