I just finished reading arguably the best version of The Punisher out there.
Despite The Punisher’s mass popularity, he’s a very simple character. He’s a vigilante that kills criminals because they killed his family. Greg Rucka approached The Punisher differently. This story is told from the outside, treating The Punisher like a tornado that envelops everything it touches. The most impressive part of it all is that Frank Castle rarely speaks and when he does it’s straight to the point. He doesn’t have long conversations with himself or narrates what’s going on around him. The spoken dialogue is usually between the two detectives that are trying their best to catch him or the villains that are about to get killed by him. Everyone in these stories is interesting and later on, Frank even gets a partner that hates criminals just as much as he does. Greg Rucka did an excellent job writing this story. I was engaged from beginning to end and that rarely happens when I read comics.
Greg Rucka is a masterful writer, but it wouldn’t mean anything if the artwork wasn’t good. Thankfully, the art is fantastic. Marco Checchetto (a name I’m not all that familiar with, unfortunately) did an amazing job here. The art has a slight noir style and dark tone that perfectly captured what Rucka was envisioning for his story. These two did an excellent job together. My only negative is that I wish this series was a bit longer because my god I could only imagine what would happen if he had kept writing these stories. Everything wrapped up beautifully and it didn’t end the way I thought it would, but I’ll let you find that out on your own because I don’t believe in giving out spoilers here at Pete’s Corner.
If you're a fan of The Punisher you owe it to yourself to read these books. They're absolutely incredible they took me on quite an adventure. If you're looking for a lot of dialogue you might be disappointed though because you won't find that here. What you will find though is plenty of what makes Frank such an interesting character and antihero.
