Have you ever watched a show and wondered why you were watching it? That’s what I kept thinking as I watched season 1 to this show.
The Shannara Chronicles is a fantasy TV show that centers around Elves, Humans, Trolls, etc. It’s not a bad show, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense either. I’ll start from the beginning to avoid confusing anyone that hasn’t watched it yet. Everything is spoiler free here so read on.
The Shannara Chronicles started off really weak in my opinion. The first episode, like many first episodes of a new TV show, has to introduce every relevant character while at the same time try and explain the world, villain, and make you care enough to return for episode 2. It was decent enough to get me curious so I guess it did the job, but nothing really happened that made me want to binge watch this show from beginning to end.
The story centers around three protagonist. Amberle, Will, and Eretria are the main characters and I’m not really crazy about any of them. My favorite character is played by Manu Benett. Instead of kicking Green Arrow’s ass in Arrow he’s a badass, staff wielding druid that kicks the crap out of demons. He’s easily the most enjoyable part of the show and is the reason why I kept going back to it.
Even Manu Benett isn’t enough for me to recommend this show. While I did love this character I didn’t really love anyone else and I couldn’t help, but point out the obvious flaws that the show has.
If Will is so important why doesn’t the Elves arm him appropriately before sending him off to uncharted territories? They didn’t even give him a decent chest piece.
It’s always pointed out that Will doesn’t have combat experience so why not give him some basic training lessons before asking him to guard the Elven princess on their quest together?
Why is everyone so pretty? I know that these are Elves, but are you seriously telling me there are no ugly Elves at all? That’s not really a complaint it’s just a observation I made quite early in the show.
The thing that the Shannara Chronicles suffers from the most is the lack of a interesting villain and a anticlimactic finish to season 1. The big bad demon army was only one episode long. I was hoping for some sort of epic battle between the forces of good and evil and it was over in 20 minutes. The main villain fight was about 5 minutes long. It was incredibly disappointing.
Love triangles are stupid, but this one wasn’t that bad. It’s cheesy as hell some times, but not bad.
One thing that blew me away was the production value. This is one beautiful show. Every time the camera zoomed out and showed off the world of The Shannara Chronicles I was always blown away by the beauty of it.
I also really love how no one knows what a car, helicopter, or school is because they’re considered relics of the past. I’m very curious about what happened to the human race and why the world we live in today is nothing more than a ruin.
When I finished The Shannara Chronicles I didn’t talk about it with anyone. It’s one of those shows that I don’t care much about and won’t recommend to any of my friends, but I do see potential and I’m willing to give season 2 a shot when it releases.
Am I the only one that thought this was a romanticized version of Lord of The Rings, but not nearly as interesting?
I want to see some other races besides Elves explored in season 2. Are there Dwarves? If there are where are they? What are they doing and why didn’t they help fight the demons? Shit like that is never explained in this show.
I purposely didn’t talk about details of the show to avoid spoiling it for those of you that hasn’t watched it yet.
