Thief has gotten mixed reviews from everyone. Some give it praise calling it a true stealth game while others bash it and call it terrible. Which one is it? Thief isn’t the best stealth game to come out in recent memory but it’s far from being a terrible game. In Thief you play as Garret, a master thief and as the title of the game implies he steals everything that isn’t bolted down to the floor and it’s accompanied by a nice first person animation. I thought the animations in this game were excellent for a first person stealth title. Usually in games like this you’ll just see the item you’re stealing disappear but in this game you’ll see Garrett pick the item up and pocket it. Even the climbing animations were well done and honestly reminded me of Prince of Persia.
As in all stealth games you’ll be forced to sneak past guards and this can take anywhere between 30 minutes to a full hour depending on your playstyle. I don’t like to be seen at all so I would literally wait and memorize all of my enemies movements before I made my move. This is something Thief does well and it’s backed by excellent lighting, and sound effects. This unfortunately is the highlight of the game because everything else is pretty average. The story in Thief is average at best. Your former apprentice dies in the beginning of the game and now Garrett is literally haunted by her. At first you’ll be thinking that he’s sick or just hallucinating and I really wanted that to be true because it would have made the story a lot more interesting then what it was but that wasn’t the case. There is something supernatural happening in the game and I’ll leave it at that to avoid any game breaking spoilers.
Garret is a master thief so you’ll expect him to know his way around town and be able to get himself out of a sticky situation if he ever found himself in one. This is another thing that this game does really well. Garret carries a variety of tools for just about every situation. If you’re breaking into a bank and want to disable all the traps then find the main circuits and cut them with a special tool. Do you want to sneak into a house late a night while everyone is asleep and rob them of their possessions? Then simply lift the window up with another tool and help yourself. You can even unscrew metal screws from various walls to steal a variety of items, or even enter a secret passage. There is always more then one way to get to your next objective and the route you take is entirely up to you.
Thief isn’t as linear as you might think. It’s open to an extent but it’s not as open as Dishonored is. You do have some freedom but the sections are small and that’s not entirely a bad thing. One thing that really bugs me about the game is the actual gameplay. While Thief does have some really nice stealth mechanics going for it if you ever get caught you’ll see how bad fighting in close quarters really is. If you push the F button then you’ll see the weak points on an enemy’s body. If you push the R button right after that then you’ll automatically knock them to the floor and from there you can knock them out. It might sound like a nice idea in theory but the actual execution of it leaves much to be desired. The animations are clunky and just feel out of place. The combat in the game is terrible and you’ll often avoid or even reload the game just so you don’t have to fight off a group of enemies.
One good, and effective way to deal with enemies is by either distracting them with your bow or by shooting them right in the face with it. Your bow will be your most used tool. You can get fire arrows, water arrows, rope arrows, and various other types of arrows to help you out while you go around stealing things. Thief is a really enjoyable game that’s plagued by some bad combat, and average story but exploring the town, accepting side quest, and stealing everything that isn’t bolted to the floor is a lot of fun. Thief won’t revolutionize the stealth genre like Splinter Cell did when it first hit the market but that doesn’t take away the charm that it has and how much fun it is to shoot a guard in the face.
Everyone here at drakulus.com highly recommends that you give this game and shot. If you’re a fan of stealth games then you might just like this one and if the 50 dollar price tag is what holding you off then get it 10 dollars cheaper for the PC.
