Thor The Dark World Review

Spread the Word!

I know i’m really late with this review but I never watch Marvel Movies in theaters. I sort of wish that I did watch this one though. It’s actually pretty good.

Anthony Hopkins: Odin

Chris Hemsworth: Thor

Tom Hiddleton: Loki

Natalie Portman: Jane Foster

Jaimie Alexander: Siff

Christopher Eccleston: Malekith the Accursed

Kat Dennings: Darcy Lewis

Idris Elba: Heimdallm

downloadThor The Dark World mostly takes place in Asgard and I thought that was awesome. We saw very little of Asgard in the first Thor Movie so being able to see more of it in the sequel was a plus for me. Another thing I really liked right away was the amount of action in this movie. It has considerably more action then it’s predecessor. Thor is stuck defending Asgard from all sorts of threats because of what Loki did in that below average Avengers Movie that came out a while back. He misses Jane and often looks in on her from time to time when he’s not too busy kicking ass and shattering giant golems into tiny rocks with a single hit from his mighty hammer Mjolnir.  Jane has been searching for Thor since he left and accidentally stepped through a dimensional rift that sent her deep underground to an ancient evil that Odin’s father sealed away from the dark elves to prevent them from covering all the 9 realms in eternal darkness.

The concept of the story is cool but it lacked quite a few things that could have made the awesome. For starters I don’t like Jane at all. I honestly thought that if she wasn’t in the movie at all it would have been just as good if not better. Thor could have gotten with Siff and it would not have made any difference to me. This movie lacked a good villain. Actually it has a pretty below average villain. He doesn’t show up much throughout the movie and when he does he’s forgettable at best. I also think the way Thor beat him was just terrible. I was expecting some epic battle between the two of them but that didn’t happen. I don’t see why they had to include Earth in the movie at all. It actually felt out of place since the majority of the movie took place in the other realms. I would have preferred the fate of all mankind be decided on Asgard in one last epic battle between Dark Elves and Asgardians. Another thing that I thought was really weird was the battle on Earth. Where did all the dark elves go. We only saw a handful of them show up. If you’re invading Earth you would expect the leader of the dark elves to at least bring his whole army with him and not just a single ship.

We saw multiple ships and hundreds if not thousands of dark elves invading Asgard but only saw like 20 of them on Earth. It almost killed the movie for me. I know so far it seems like i’m bashing the crap out of this movie. Lets get to what I did like about it.

Loki was awesome. This is actually the only movie that Tom Hiddleton has done as Loki that I’ve liked. He was genuinely funny and I loved seeing him break down after his mother died. That scene alone imagespretty much made the movie. I liked watching Thor and Loki reestablish some of the bond that they had in the first movie and watching them kick ass together was fantastic. Just about every line between Thor and Loki was memorable and performed very well by both Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Hiddleton but I feel like it’s time for a change to happen in the Thor Movies. We’ve already had Loki in two of the Thor Movies and I don’t think he should be in a third. It’s time to introduce some new villains for Thor to go up against.  I know Loki wasn’t the villain in this movie but he’s still in the movie and as a Thor fan I would love to see him go against Fafnir, or how awesome would it be if Thor went up against the Skurge the Executioner, Amora the Enchantress or even Hela herself! There is a lot of potential for future villains that aren’t Loki. Loki was awesome but give him rest. We’ve seen him in three straight movies now and I think a new villain is a must at this point.

As I mentioned earlier Thor The Dark World has some very nice action sequences. Thor showed us why he is the God Of Thunder in this movie. He was zapping shit left and right and smacking everything that moved with Mjolnir. I really enjoyed Thor The Dark World and I have high hopes for the next movie. The ending of this movie tells me that Loki will play a part in the next but just how big a part remains to be seen.  While it does fall short of earning my recommendation I do think it’s a step in the right direction for the Thor Movies.

Our Verdict: 7/10

I found The Dark World quite disappointing after months of hype. Take Loki out of the film and it’s a very dull film as I thought his scenes with Thor were the only thing that kept me interested in what was going on. The main villain is highly forgettable and even after watching this film twice, I still forget why he was so obsessed with controlling the Aether. They really should have devoted more time to developing Malakeith’s backstory as he came across as more of a nuisance than a serious threat to the universe (or at least the 9 realms involved).

Here’s hoping that Captain America: The Winter Soldier doesn’t let me down. 😉

I really enjoyed this film, I do though prefer the first one. It was nice to see CHristopher Eccleston as a villain, one which I thought was ok. For me though, Idris Elba is the real star of this film.

“He was zapping shit left and right and smacking everything that moved”

Hehe, this. I don’t watch Marvel films for their plots, character development or relationships. They’re all pretty stale and predictable anyway. It’s the wrapping that counts, and in this it was pretty awesome.
But yes, I agree that we need a new villain. Loki has become soft.

Thanks for reading and yes I agree we really need another villain and if I want to watch a great superhero movie with an awesome story i’ll just watch The Dark Knight again.

I had a bunch of fun with this, even though Thor is not my favorite superhero in the slightest bit. However, I guess that’s just what happens when you have good writing and exciting, action set-pieces to work with. Good review.

Thanks. Thor actually is my favorite Marvel Superhero [Superman being my favorite DC Superhero] and I am a little disappointed in the movie. I think that’s because Loki has been in three movies now and I need a break from him.

Nice review, buddy! Glad you liked this one. I agree–the stuff between Thor and Loki is the best. It is a shame that the villain didn’t get more of a personality, particularly because the actor, Christopher Eccleston, really is great. Nonetheless, despite any faults, this one is still a lot of fun. One of my favorite solo Marvel films to date. 🙂 P.S. A Dragon’s Loyalty Award for you!

I’ll admit that I don’t know much about Christopher Eccleston and this movie really didn’t show his potential to me. Thanks! I’ll have to make time to write a response for this!

I mostly know him from Doctor Who, but I know he’s had roles in other things–28 Days Later and I think the first G.I. Joe movie. And no worries about the award! Just if you want to and have the time. 🙂

I have enjoyed the two Thor movies. I agree that Loki stole the show once again. Yeah you’re right, the main villain wasn’t very good. He didn’t say much and just relied on looking evil.
