Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales Review (Mini Review)

Spread the Word!

Thronebreaker is set in The Witcher universe and has us traveling around the world and playing Gwent. So how good is it?

The Great:

If there’s one area where this game excels it’s in the sounds department. The voice acting is great and I really like the soundtrack. Queen Meve, and the surrounding cast, all sound fantastic. The voice actors and actresses in this game should be commended on their great performances here. CD Projekt Red has, once again, knocked it out the park with the sounds. I wish the rest of the game was good.

The Good:

You play as Queen Meve on her journey to take back her throne and bring peace to her land. It’s an interesting story at times and has some good dialog between characters, but I never felt as invested in this game’s story like I did all of the previous Witcher games. Queen Meve isn’t a very interesting protagonist to me. The story itself is good, but it’s far from the best this company has put out there.

Thronebreaker is a good looking game. It never wowed me or made me want to stop and take a million screenshots, but it gets the job done. I liked running around the overworld, talking to citizens, and listening to the nice soundtrack that this game has while avoiding the god awful puzzles and gameplay in general.

 The Bad:

I loved Gwent in The Witcher 3 and then CD Projekt Red milked it into oblivion by giving us a shitty multiplayer game now an entire 30+ hour game with Gwent gameplay… This game was a chore to playthrough. The puzzles are stupid and only slowed the gameplay to a crawl and none of the rewards for doing them were worth it. The only saving grace is that most battles are only a single round of Gwent, but there’s no skipping it because it’s how you play the game. There is no combat like The Witcher 3. This game is boring and it pains me to say, erm… write, that! I tried my best to like this game. I really did. I kept telling myself it would get better, but the truth is I got bored 3 hours in and I had to force myself to finish this game because I wanted to see how the story ended. Traveling around the overworld quickly became a chore because my reward for doing so was rarely worth it. I would unlock a new card… that I can only use in the shitty multiplayer Gwent game. Are you serious? Unlocking rewards for a subpar card game isn’t going to get me to login and start playing it again. Gwent is complete trash and I hope this is the last time we get a game in this style. At least I can look forward to Cyberpunk 2077. I wonder if that’s going to get a card game on the side?

I would have preferred if this game played more like Diablo or something with a top down view instead of being a card game because it’s super repetitive, boring, and I feel like I wasted 30 hours of my life.

The Verdict

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is one of the worst games I've played this year. I was so excited when I booted it up because I thought it would be amazing, but the best adventure card game is still Lost Kingdom back on the Gamecube. I recommend tracking that game down and playing through that instead of playing this shit. This game does tell a good story, but you can always watch that on Youtube instead of playing this very, very boring game.
