Top 10 Games Of 1990

Spread the Word!

In 1990 I was only a year old, but I remember sitting down with my mom and playing Super Mario World. That was my introduction to gaming and I’ve been in love with video games ever since that night. This is my top 10 games of 1990.

10. Lord of The Rings – Fellowship of The Ring

Lord of The Rings has had some really good games over the years. This game was my introduction to the Lord of the Rings, but I didn’t fully grasp how deep the lore was until much later. When I kid I played this game a lot and I have very fond memories of myself getting killed over and over again.

9.  Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse was the shit back in the day. I spent countless hours playing this game as a child. The music, gameplay, and environments were one of a kind back in the day and Mickey Mouse himself was a joy to play as. I have very fond memories of this game.

8. Splatterhouse

Splatterhouse was unlike anything I had ever played at the time. I was running around as some big dude that looked just like Jason from Friday the 13th and I was murdering all sorts of different monsters in the goriest way possible. Splatterhouse was a lot fun unlike the remake that shall never be remembered by anyone…

7. Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone

Any game that allowed me to kick as with a family member in the 90’s is something I could play all day long. My brother and I spent many hours in front of our screen while we beat the living shit out of bad guys. The good ole days…

6. Balloon Kid

Floating around on balloons while collecting more balloons, dodging birds, and other monsters on the Gameboy was great. I remember playing this all the way through to the end and that feeling I got when I finally finished Balloon Kid was great because it was one of the first games I ever completed. I’m getting all nostalgic just thinking about it :].

5. The Terminator

Before GTA there was The Terminator. In this game you could steal cars, explore the open world, and murder people. This game  redefined sandbox games back in the day, but most people tend to forget that because of all the bad Terminator games out there.

4. Alien Storm

The nostalgia I feel when thinking about playing this in the old arcade at the mall when I kid :]. This is another game that my brother and I couldn’t get enough of when we were kids. Whenever I have friends over at my house we don’t go for Call of Duty or Halo. Instead we dust off our old controllers and play some Alien Storm and we have just as much fun playing this classic today as we did when we were children in a arcade or on the Sega Genesis.

3. Mega Man 3

You knew this game would make the list somewhere right? It’s freaking Mega Man! Mega Man 3 took everything that was great about the first one and refined it while adding in new abilities for Mega Man to use. The only reason why this isn’t higher is because I hate the fact that when I get hit by an enemy I have fly a few feet back. That’s caused me to die more times then I care to admit.

2. Castlevania III Dracula’s Curse

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of this game is the awesome soundtrack. It’s so catchy that I can’t help, but bop my head to the beat some times. The gameplay is still phenomenal, the level design is excellent, and in my opinion Dracula’s Curse has aged very well.  This is a classic Castlevania game. Being able to switch between characters helped pushed this game up above Mega Man.

  1. Super Mario Bros 3

This was a no brainer. Super Mario Bros 3 is one of the best games ever made and I still play it today. It’s aged really well, the graphics still look really good, the gameplay is spectacular, and the stage design is excellent. Boss fights, while simple, are fun and finding ways to skip entire worlds is a challenge in itself. Super Mario Bros 3 was  ahead of it’s time and easily trumps everything that released in 1990.

I’m going to make a top 10 list for every year that I’ve been gaming and I’m thinking about reviewing some, possibly all, the games from back in the day too. I hope you enjoyed my top 10 games of 1990 and I’ll have my top 10 games of 1991 posted up some time next week.

Solid list! I’m especially surprised to see Balloon Kid on there. I first played it on Virtual Console, but I really enjoyed it. It’s a nice gem.

Balloon Kid is a classic in my opinion. I remember struggling to hold that big ass gameboy when I was a toddler and playing Balloon kid for hours.

Wow, it turns out I am older than you. I was ten years old in 1990. Megaman fan eh? So what are your thoughts on Mighty No.9?

      I was born in 1989 :).

I’m still playing through Mighty #9, but so far it’s not really good imo.
