Top 10 Games of 1991

Spread the Word!

Here’s my official top 10 games of 1991!

I have not given up on making a top 10 list for every year that I’ve been on this earth. This list took a while to make and I’m pretty happy with the games that I chose to be here.

10. Alien Breed

Do you like mindlessly killing shit? If you do you’ll love Alien Breed because that’s literally all you do from the time you start until you finish the game. It’s fun and that’s what games are supposed to be. This game does have some performance issues, but it’s still a great little action game to waste a few hours playing.

9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time

My brother and I used to play this game all day long. Turtles in Time has aged very well and still look good too. If only Ninja Turtle games of today could be as good as the ones that released yesteryear…

8. Metroid II: Return of Samus

Return of Samus is fast paced and will test your skills as a gamer. This game was gold on the Gameboy. As long as I had some battery power left I would try, and fail, to beat this game. It wasn’t until many years later that I decided to try and complete it again and I finally succeeded. Samus is one badass lady and this is one game I recommend everyone to play at least one.

7. Another World

There was no game like Another World when it released. The visuals of this game still blow me away every time I go back to it. It paved the way for games like Limbo, and Metal Gear Solid. Another World told a brilliant story without spoken world or written dialogue. The only drawback is the gameplay, but that’s mostly because I played this year instead of back in 1991 when it would have been considered good gameplay.

6. Civilization

The Civlization series started with this game. Civilization isn’t the best strategy game by any means, but at the time it was remarkable. You start the game by choosing a civilization and your goal is the win in a variety of different ways. The graphics are by all means horrible, but I had a lot of fun playing this gem back in the day and it paved the way for future installments in the series.

5. Super Castlevania IV

Before Konami became a crappy company they actually made some fantastic Castlevania games. Super Castlevania IV has us doing what we love to do in Castlevania games and that’s kicking the crap out of the undead with a long ass whip. This Castlevania was a bit longer than previous Castlevania games, but it wasn’t as challenging on your first playthrough. The real challenge started on the second playthrough.

4. Sonic The Hedgehog

Sega’s biggest mascot to compete with Mario makes his debut at number 5! Sonic The Hedgehog is a fantastic game. The platforming, fast paced action, and soundtrack is enough for me to recommend this game. The level design is excellent, the boss fights are simple, but memorable and Sonic has proven to be one of the best protagonist in all of gaming and it all started with this game.

Anyone of the top three games can easily be switched to be number in my opinion. They’re all that good and it was really hard for me to put them in order :).

3. Street Fighter II

Street Fighter II is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s aged very well and I still play it some times. The iconic characters, soundtrack, and awesome gameplay make this one of my most played games of all time.

On a side note… where the fuck is Blanka in Street Fighter V?!

2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past

It doesn’t get much better than this. The Legend of Zelda series has been around for a really long time, but this arguably the best game in the long running series. A Link To The Past, just like Street Fighter 2 above, is a masterpiece and is one of the best games I’ve ever played. It’s aged well, like many Nintendo games do, and is still very playable today.

  1. Super Mario World

The best Mario game ever made is the best game of 1991. I regularly praise this game as being some of Nintendo’s best work. This game made me a lifelong Nintendo fan. Super Mario World introduced the world to Yoshi and sent Mario on a brand new adventure filled with a ton of stages and some excellent boss fights. We’ve never had another Mario game like this one and we probably never will.

Super Mario World wraps up my top 10 games of 1991. I had fun making this list because I got to revisit some of my all time favorite games. If you were around back then what are some of your favorite games? Even if you weren’t feel free to share your own favorite games.
