My Recommendations Top Ten Best Games 11

Top 10 Games of 1995

Spread the Word!

I took a long break from top 10 list, but they’re back and I’m still on a quest to drop a top 10 list for every year that I’ve been gaming. Here’s my top 10 games of 1995!

10. Mortal Kombat 3

Mortal Kombat 3 gave us the biggest roster of characters we’ve ever had in the series at that point. We got characters like Smoke, and Kabal. I remember winning every match with Smoke because it was easy to cheese people with him back then. Mortal Kombat 3 was fun and I used to play this game with brother and sister for hours.

9. Donkey Kong Country 2Β

I remember being disappointed because I couldn’t choose Donkey Kong in this game when I was kid. Now that I’m much older I can look back at how great this game really is. This game introduced us to Dixie Kong and her and Diddy went on a quest to rescue Donkey Kong. It’s a good game and one of the best ones to release in 1995.

8. Panzer Dragoon

Panzer Dragoon is an old favorite of mine. Sega hit gold when they released this game and it’s future sequels. I loved playing this over and over when I was a kid and I enjoy playing it’s sequels now. If you haven’t played this game you should. It’s really good.

7. Tales of PhantasiaΒ

The first Tales of game released in 1995 and it was one hell of a new IP. I’m not a huge Tales of fan. I haven’t played every game in the series and I have no problem ranking this as one of the best games I’ve played in the series.

6. Hexen: Beyond Heretic

Hexen was one of the first gory games I ever played. I grew up on Super Mario and Sonic and had no idea that a game could get so violent before I played this one. My brother and I loved this game and enjoyed playing through multiple times.

5. Mega Man 7Β

Mega Man 7 is a bit different. You can’t choose what boss to try and beat in this game. It all plays out for you like a traditional game and it’s focus on the story is a welcome change of pace in my opinion. Mega Man 7 isn’t the best game in the series, but it’s one and worth playing. It looks really nice too and has aged pretty well.

4. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

Super Mario World is the best Mario game ever made. Nintendo had huge shoes to fill with it’s sequel and they didn’t disappoint. It’s not as good as the original game, but it doesn’t have to be. I got to play as Yoshi carrying baby Mario around on his back. That shit was fun and that’s enough for me.

3. Dragon Quest VI

I didn’t play Dragon Quest VI until many years after it’s release. I played through an emulator with an English patch and I really enjoyed it. It’s an underrated gem.

2. Chrono Trigger

Many people consider this game to be the pinnacle of JRPGs. I’m not one of them, but I do consider it a great game though. Chrono Trigger was ahead of it’s time and gave me many hours of enjoyment.

1. Tetris Attack

Where do I start with this game? Should I tell you that I put over 200 hours in this as a kid? Should I say that it’s the best form of Tetris ever made? This game is still fantastic. The gameplay is fantastic, the characters are great, and playing locally is great. It’s a fun game with a fantastic soundtrack and stars Yoshi as the main character. I love how this game went with the other guys in the Mario universe instead of your usual setup of characters.

And that wraps up my top 10 games of 1995! What are your favorite games from 1995?

Donkey Kong Country, Mortal Kombat and Yoshi’s Islands were the only games on this list that I’ve played. Earthworm Jim was a great game released in 1995 but I had my brother beat most of the game for me lol. Great post!

I don’t remember Earthworm Jim :). I remember having fun with it, but I don’t remember any details so I didn’t add it to my list.

It’s going to take me a while, but in a week or so (I’m hoping), I’m going to have a blog post ready that will start a nostalgia 90s tour, going month by month rather than year by year. There’s so much shit to get through that I’m not confident I’ll be able to get all the way through 1999. 1990 alone is a bit of a pain in the ass.

But anyway, there’s some interesting games that I’m going to bring up for January 1990 if you’re interested (even if most of them were on the NES, because let’s face it, the NES was kicking everyone’s ass until 1991, when the SNES would come out, and the Sega Genesis had a decent library, and PC games were starting to come into their own). Hence to say, when it came to video gaming, there was no decade quite like the 90s.

I was very much into PC games at that time – Command & Conquer, Dark Forces, MechWarrior 2 for me. πŸ™‚

I’ve never played the first Command & Conquer. I’m sure it was really good though :). Never heard of the other ones.

C&C caught on with my friends and I thanks to the cheesy cinematics and military focus it had. There was even a expansion. Pack that had a secret mission (?) that let you take on dinosaurs. πŸ™‚

Dark Forces was Doom crossed with Star Wars which was an easy sell for me. MechWarrior 2 took the BattleTech games and turned it into a sim. Both perfect for a time in my life when I had plenty of hours for games. πŸ™‚

The soundtrack in Donkey Kong Country 2 was amazing! I also loved Yoshi’s Island as a kid. I really need to play Chrono Trigger someday too. Backlogs are annoying…

    Great list! πŸ™‚

Yoshi’s Island was so good. I still remember that opening song too. I used to have it as my ring tone :). Back logs aren’t annoying to me. It gives me something to do after I complete the newer games that I add to my collection. Not having enough hard drive space is annoying to me because I don’t like deleting my games :).

OMG I love that opening song so much. It’s so tropical and relaxing, haha.

a great year for gaming. Super Mario world 2, MK3 and DKC2 are definitely up there for me as well. Chrono Trigger i hadn’t played until many years later, but had I played that in 1995, i would’ve said the same about it.

A few others I’d add, Megaman X3 & mechwarrior 2! I remember getting a cd rom and mechwarrior 2 just blew me away. Had a proper joystick and everything for it. Although the original game came out in 1994, Star Wars Tie Fighter Collectors CD ROM edition was also one of my favourites of all times.

Donkey Kong Country 2 is my favorite 2D platformer. It manages to succeed in a way Donkey Kong Country didn’t, I feel.

I wouldn’t quite consider Chrono Trigger the best JRPG either (as good as it is, I think Persona 4 beats it handily), but I found it’s deserving of its strong following.

I played Dragon Quest VI earlier this year, and I enjoyed it. It’s my third favorite in the series behind VII and V.

I’m not sure which year I’d consider the best in gaming (or if I could even narrow it down to one), but 1995 was definitely a solid one.
