This is the biggest list of games I’ve ever attempted. What better way to start off my first top 20 list then by listing my 20 favorite games of the last generation.
I won’t be adding PC games to this list because I wasn’t a PC gamer last generation. I became a PC gamer shortly before the Xbox One released and I’ve probably played 5 games on this list on PC.
20. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Tropical Freeze is a fantastic platformer that lets us play as our favorite gorilla. Donkey Kong is on a brand new adventure and it can get crazy. It can also get pretty freaking hard too. I can’t recall how many times I’ve died at this game. It’s a gem and it’s one of my many reasons why I think the Wii U is a great underrated console.
19. Mario Kart 8
The only racing that I can play all day long is this one. Mario Kart 8 took the beloved series in a somewhat new direction by borrowing elements from Sonic All Star Racing Transformed by letting our vehicles change on the fly. It’s really cool and I can’t tell you how many hours of fun this game has given me.
18. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Lords of Shadow is one of the best Castlevania games ever made. Don’t let all the haters convince you that it’s not. This game is awesome and I like the new direction that this game took the series in. This game has a great story, good gameplay, and good boss fights too. What’s there not to like?
17. Yoshi’s Woolly World
Yoshi’s Woolly World is just an adorable game. I love Yoshi. He’s up there with Mario as my favorite Nintendo character of all time. I’ve played through this game multiple times with my wife and kids and we always have a blast every single time. If you’ve never played this game you should. And it’s another reason to buy a Wii U!
16. Stella Glow
Stella Glow is amazing. It’s a shame what happened to the devs that made it. It’s a real gem that tells a great story and has great gameplay too. It’s like a modern Final Fantasy Tactics. It’s one of the best games on the 3DS and I highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already.
15. Alan Wake
Alan Wake is one of the best horror games ever made. It was great from beginning to end and would be in my top 10 if I didn’t include Nintendo games to this list. Alan Wake is one of a kind. There hasn’t been another game like it since it released back in 2010.
14. Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario 3D World is one of my all-time favorite Mario games. I’m not sure where I would rank it if I ever made a top 10 list, but the fact that it’s on there is saying something when you think about how many Mario games there are today. This game holds a special place in my heart because it let me play with all of my kids (well… three of them anyway) at the same time. We had so much fun going through this game over and over for about 200+ hours.
13. Fallout 3
Fallout 3 hasn’t aged super well, but it’s still very playable today. I’ve had so many great moments in this game that I considered placing this in the top 10 a few times. I’m happy with where it is though.
12. The Witcher 2
The Witcher 2 is so good. The only real negative complaint I have is the final act in Roche’s campaign. It felt rushed and I didn’t like the outcome of it at all. This game is amazing and is better than The Witcher 3 in some ways. This is a good introduction to the series if you’ve never played any of the games before.
11. Borderlands 2
I need some gun porn in my life. Borderlands 2 is probably the best multiplayer game I’ve ever played. I would have to sit down and think about it, but if it’s not it’ll be in the top 3 for sure. Borderlands 2 is like Diablo with guns. It has a great story, fantastic characters, and is the only great game Gearbox has ever made.
10. Super Smash Bros.
Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U is the best one in the series by a country mile. The 8 player smash mode is enough to justify that statement in my opinion. Add in Mega Man, and an OP as fuck Pac Man and you’ve got yourself the best roster of characters ever assembled in a fighting game. Yes, I love the game that much.
9. Xenoblade Chronicles X
Another Wii U game. Who would’a thunk? Xenoblade Chronicles X is the best game on the Wii U by far. It has a gorgeous open world, good story, great customization, a great soundtrack, and good customization too. It’s one of the largest games I’ve ever played. My first playthrough was well over 130 hours and I still haven’t discovered all of the world. It’s that big.
8. Fire Emblem: Awakening
This was a no-brainer when I started making this up. The only question I had was where I would place it in my top 10. Fire Emblem: Awakening saved the Fire Emblem franchise and now it’s everywhere. It helps that this game is actually freaking fantastic too. This is a good entry into the series if you’re a noob at SRPGs. I can’t recommend this game enough to those of you that haven’t played it yet.
7. Splinter Cell Blacklist
Splinter Cell Blacklist is so good. It’s one of the few stealth games that doesn’t punish you for not playing the way the developer intended you to. It’s great and if I don’t feel like being sneaky (which is never) I can go in guns blazing and still get a good score. This game is so fucking good. Play it!
6. Dark Souls 1 & 2
From Software gave us two (technically 3) amazing games last generation. Dark Souls took the world by storm and became a huge success. Games today still mimic its playstyle, but none of them have come close to surpassing them. These games are amazing and reward you for your patience over rushing in and trying to Dynasty Warriors your way to victory.
5. Bioshock 1 & Infinite
I could have added Bioshock 2, but honestly, it was a big disappointment to me so. Bioshock 1 & Infinite are masterpieces that tell great stories. I couldn’t choose between the two so I put both of them on the list.
4. Dragon Age: Origins
What more can I say about this game? It’s a true masterpiece and that’s not a word I use often in gaming. Dragon Age: Origins is in a class of its own when compared to other CRPG games. It has everything you look for in a great RPG. A great story, characters, gameplay, customization, and tough decisions to make that alter how your story plays out. This game is amazing and is still the best Dragon Age game to date.
3. Pokemon Sun/Moon
You knew a Pokemon game would pop on this list somewhere right? Pokemon Sun/Moon was a breath of fresh air for the Pokemon series. Gym battles are replaced with trails and we got a good story too. I enjoyed catching my little critters and making them beat the crap out of other people’s critters while I fought my way to become the very first Alola Champion.
Skyrim is my favorite game of all time, but it made number 2 on this list. Why? Because I cheated and have more than one game at number 1. Skyrim is amazing and it’s also on every platform. I’ve put well over 1,000 hours into this game and every time I started a new playthrough I would have a new story to tell. No other game comes close to matching this one to me.
1. Mass Effect Trilogy
The Mass Effect Trilogy is the best trilogy of games ever made. Commander Shepard is my favorite protagonist of all time and I haven’t been emotionally connected to a game like this one in my life. I love the characters and world that Bioware built for us to enjoy.
What are your favorite games of the last generation?
