Video Games Don’t Cause Violence

Spread the Word!

We have ourselves another good ole gaming controversy! It’s easy for non-gamers to look at video games and think that they’re polluting the young minds of the people that play them. What they fail to see is how much good video games do for people too.

This isn’t the first time video games have been attacked by the media. Grand Theft Auto has seen its share of controversies throughout the years, Dark Souls was considered satanic because of its name, and now politicians are blaming the recent gun crisis on violent video games. I am 28 years old. I’ll be 29 in August. I’m not a perfect person. You can look up my criminal record online and see that shit, but you didn’t see me in court blaming Skyrim for stealing shit or Street Fighter for getting into street fights, resisting arrest, etc. I answered for my crimes that I committed and took responsibility for my actions. Video games did not make me do the things that I did. Video games were my escape from all of that shit. I was depressed and considering killing myself and some games helped me through that shit. Eventually, I met my wife and she changed my life.

President Trump can say whatever he wants to say. He’s probably the most unintelligent leader the United States has ever had. Video games didn’t make these psychopaths go into a school and start killing people with automatic weapons. Our gun laws did. Why should the American public have access to assault rifles? If you’re not a solder you don’t one. Period. I don’t care what excuse you have or what you have to say in response to that. There is no need for any civilian to have access to an assault rifle. I’m not here to debate the second amendment with you. So what was Trump’s answer to all of these violent crimes? To arm teachers with guns. Bring more guns into the situation instead of making them harder to get or banning the use of assault weapons. Did that happen? Nope. Will it happen? Probably not. Instead, the media went after video games because that’s the easy answer. It’s easy to blame a guy that plays video games for losing his shit and killing a bunch of people. The problem is that’s never been proven to be the answer in cases like this.

And why aren’t more people committing these violent acts since millions of people play video games? Video games have absolutely nothing to do with what’s been happening lately. I can flip the argument and say the exact same thing about movies. There are violent movies that people watch every single day so that must mean that movies are at fault for all the violence right? Do you see how stupid that sounds? I mentioned earlier that I’m 28 years old. I’ve been playing video games since 1990. Since I was old enough to walk I’ve been into video games. I was bullied in school by kids older than me and every day in that place was hell. Video games were my way of escaping all of that shit. Video games help me relax after a hard day’s work. Video Games helped me with depression and video games have not once ever in my life made me want to hurt another person. I grew up playing Mortal Kombat. That was as violent as games got back then. I play Wolfenstein, Doom, Dark Souls, and many other great, violent games and none of them has turned me into a violent person or made me buy a gun and murder people. Hold everyone accountable for their own actions and stop blaming a form of entertainment for the bad shit that happens in America. Something has to be done about our gun laws. Blaming video games isn’t the answer.

It seems like one tragedy happens and all of sudden video games is to blame for violence among our youth. It seems like the 90’s all over again when you had people upset about violence in video games and rap music. It’s not the video games or rappers giving kids these kids guns. A copy of GTA 5 doesn’t come with an AK-47. N.W.A didn’t provide hand guns with the Straight Outta Compton CD. The person who commits such acts needs to be held accountable. And politicians and the NRA need to stop using video games and other such media as a scapegoat. Let’s get to the root of the problem. How are they getting access to such weapins? I’m sure the makers of GTA 5 or any members of N.W.A did not provide it to them. This issue really pisses me off.

Exactly. Shit like this happened long before video games were invented and it’s going to keep on happening. Instead of them doing something productive about the situation they’re blaming video games…

Gun control has been a problem even before video games got big. For this to stop we are gonna need stronger regulations on guns. Not the type of video games an individual is playing.

I agree. And now we have teachers carrying guns. I’m not sending my kids to school to be around people with guns. We need stricter gun laws. We’re the only country in the world with this problem and our leader isn’t going to do anything to stop it. He’s only making it worse for everyone.

Trump is no genius, but I think Bush was dumber. It’s sad to see that in this day and age some people still want to use gaming as a scapegoat for gun crime. Games are sold in other countries, which don’t suffer from mass shootings so I wouldn’t blame the hobby for society’s ills.

Bush is definitely dumber than Trump. And you made a great point about games in other countries. Mass shootings like this are rare in other parts of the world and it seems to happen in America a lot more. Games have nothing to do with it.

Well said! Video games have helped me get over anger issues and have definitely saved my life. Humans are just violent creatures. Look at all the violence that happened over the course of our entire history… long before video games were even invented.

Yep. Video games have helped me with depression and anger. They help me express my creativity and it’s a good bonding tool for my family. I can spend quality time with my kids playing video games or just watching them play and have fun. Games don’t corrupt people. People have violent long before games existed and they’ll continue to be long after I’m dead and gone.
