What I've Been Up To

Spread the Word!

It’s been awhile since I last wrote one of these hasn’t it? I know I haven’t been writing much lately, but that’s because I’ve been working on a secret project that I’ll touch up on a little below.

Things have been a little stressful lately. I was told that we had to be out of house by certain date last month. Since that was my number 1 priority I stopped doing weekly podcast with Bradley, and Chuck over at Counter Attack Games. I miss talking with them and hopefully I’ll be back soon. The good news is I no longer have to move, but since all of this has happened I really want to now because I don’t trust the landlord.

Every summer is always busy for my family. My wife’s birthday is in June, my oldest child’s is in July, and mine is in August. Planning birthdays is usually the way we spend our time, but that’s not the reason why I haven’t been writing here. I’m working on a book. I just started writing the first chapter after making a bunch of notes and setting up the lore of the world that I’m building. I’m naming characters, places, giving everyone a backstory, and trying my best not to fuck it all up. I’m my own worst critic and I usually think whatever I come up with is really bad while everyone says it’s really good.

I’m not prepared to go into details on my book, but I’m working really hard on it and I’m really excited to be writing like that again. My dream has always been to publish a book and I plan on making it a reality.

On the gaming side of things I’m currently playing through The Witcher 3 for 5th time. I’m in love with this game all over again and I’m playing through new game plus for the first time on the death march difficulty. I’m really enjoying it and I’ve got about 16 hours in my new playthrough. I’m about halfway through the Bloody Baron quest.

I’m also playing The Elder Scrolls Legends because I love card games and I think this is the best one to play right now. It’s balanced, with the exception of two cards, and it’s not pay to win at all. I love it and I can’t stop playing it. I also got my wife into Skyrim and taught her how to mod it. I helped her download about 40 mods last night and watched her play a little before I went back to The Witcher 3.

I’m reading through Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher series. I finished The Last Wish and I’m about halfway through Sword of Destiny. This dude is a douche, but he’s one hell of a writer and I love his work. I plan on reading through all of the Witcher books and then I’m going to move on to the Metro books or that Stellaris e-book that I’ve been putting off for weeks now.

And I think that’s everything. I’m excited to be writing again and I haven’t done much gaming and since I don’t really post much non gaming content here that’s why I haven’t been writing :).

What have you been up to?

Awesome to see you’re working on a book. That’s rpetty much been what I’ve been up to too. I’ve been marketing my most recent release, marketing my first anthology appearance, editing three otehr books that i’m getting ready to pass to publishers for consideration, and ediitng a few other anthology submissions. It does make it hard to keep up with blogging when you’re busy like that! Good luck with the book, it’s a long but rewarding road 🙂

Wow. Have any links to your work? Would love to check it out :).

Just coming up with the lore to everything is taking hours of my time every day, but it’s a great feeling because I’m creating my own world.

I certainly do: https://mattdoylemedia.com has them on the sidebar on the home page.
Just click each cover for a little more information about each book. They’re all a little different too.
Addict (Cassie Tam Files 1) is my most recent and that was published NineStar Press. That one was described as Sam Spade meets Blade Runner with an LGBT protagonist.
The Spark Form Chronicles were self-published, and they’re kinda a hoamge to my 90’s childhood. You’ve got YuGiOh! style card gaming played out by holograms on events that are designed to mimic modern pro wrestling, you’ve got AI philosophy, some general sci-fi.
Teller Tales is a mix of publishing house and self-published right now and is a little closer to horror than I normally write.

I know what you mean. Coming up with the lore is so time consuming, and then getting it into the book in an effective manner takes time too. It really is a great feeling though! Creating worlds and telling stories is wonderful. What sort of genre are you writing?

I’m writing a dark fantasy right now with some strong horror elements. It’s not over the top fantasy with orcs or elves, but it has magic, and monsters and is set in somewhat recent times. Instead of using real life locations I’m making them all up and giving them a backstory. I’m creating my own monsters and a my friend, and wife are going to be working on the artwork for me.

I’ll be sure to check those out. Thanks for the link :).

That sounds awesome. There’s a freedom to creating your own locations I find. I always find that that make it far easier to deal with the settings as you don’t have to worry about real works trappings so much

That’s true. If I made it set in the real world I would have to do a ton of research to make sure I got the atmosphere right. I would rather use that time to create something original :).

Exactly. It’s not so bad if you’re already really familiar with somewhere, but if you’re writing outside that, being able to build a place from scratch is much more useful.

A book is a hell of an undertaking! Well done you and I look forward to hearing about it in time!

Here is what I’ve been doing: work. Work forever. 10-12 hour days are the killer right now.

      Thanks!

I feel your pain dude. I used to work 20 hour days and the only thing I did when I got home was sleep. Glad my life isn’t like that anymore.

Dude, you’re making a book? That is freaking awesome! I really hope you can achieve your dream and get it published! No worries about being inactive. Life comes first man, and it sounds like you’ve had a lot of things to work through, both good and bad. I wish you and your family Happy Birthdays! And I sincerely hope things are okay. Let me know if you ever need something or someone to talk to. Take care man!

And I must also say thank you for sticking up all us who commented when that person was badmouthing our supposed bad taste and sleaziness. You handled it in style.

          Any time dude :).

I’m used to getting toxic comments, but I won’t tolerate people bad mouthing my readers. All that crap that lady said was uncalled for and rude. No need to thank me for that :).
