Wolfenstein: The New Colossus the sequel to my all-time favorite FPS game The New Order. Is it any good? Read on to find out what I think of The New Colossus!
Don’t fix what’s not broken. The New Colossus plays identically to the first game with a few minor adjustments. I can now dual wield two different guns instead of two of the same gun. I loved running around with an automatic shotgun in one hand a grenade launcher in the other. I was wrecking shit left and right… Until I died. I died more times than I care to admit in this game. The New Colossus can be brutally hard. I love it. There are many difficulty options in this game that caters to everyone. If you just want to enjoy the story play the lowest difficulty and if you’re an insane person go ahead and play on the hardest one. This game gave me more of what made the first game so great and it’s a legitimate game of the year contender in my opinion.
Once again MachineGames has proved that they can tell a great story in this series. The story in this game is better than it was in the first one and story in that one was great. After the events of the first game, Blazkowicz is a mere shell of his former self. He’s been in a coma for months and can no longer walk. The opening stage has us running, well… rolling, and gunning against Nazis trying to kill us. I was sold on this game at the very beginning because it’s not every day that I can kill people while confined to a freaking wheelchair. Everything about the opening level was fantastic and it was a great introduction to this game.
Frau Engel is a great villain. You can’t help but love to hate this woman in this game. She’s pure evil. The way she belittles her daughter because of her weight and invades her personal privacy is one of many fucked up things this lady does in this game. She had her moments in the first game too, but man they took the asshole meter and shot it up to 11 for this game. She’s a fantastic villain that I wanted to shoot in the face from the moment I met her in the last game. There’s a pretty big surprise in this game that sets up the third game perfectly in my opinion.
Where do I start with B.J.’s lover? She’s a pregnant, badass, Nazi shooting woman that kicks just as much ass as her man. This woman is awesome. All of the women in this game are awesome, but she stood above the rest to me. The final stage of the game cemented her as one of the best females in gaming history for me. She’s well acted and had great moment after great moment. Every scene with her in it was phenomenal.
Everyone in this game is likable to a degree. They all have backstories, former lives, and are very well written. Everyone got their time to in the spotlight and that’s a rare thing in games these days.
B.J Is More Than A Nazi Killing Machine
We went down memory lane in this game with B.J. Blazkowicz. There’s a point in this game where B.J. has all but given up on life and one mission, in particular, takes us down memory lane. We see what the living conditions were like for B.J. growing up and how he treated as a child by his racist father. It was an awesome mission and helped establish Blazkowicz as a character in this game.
The New Colossus is right up there with the best looking games to release this year. The character models, different locales, and enemies look fantastic. The particle effects are good, the lighting is excellent, and this game ran like a dream on my rig. What more can I ask for?
The voice acting, soundtrack, explosions, guns, and even the death screams sound great here. It’s top-notch quality. The voice acting, in particular, is probably the best I’ve heard all year. It’s great and it gave life to these characters. I loved getting to know everyone because of how well they were voice acted. I loved listening to two Nazis have a conversation about me right before I snuck up behind them and knifed, well… Axed, them in the back. Guns have that oomph that other games forget, or are too lazy, don’t get right. Playing through this game with my headset was a treat for my ears and it’s an experience I would love to have again.
The best way to play this game is like you would play Doom. Moving around as fast as you can and popping shit in the face. The stealth isn’t bad in this game, but it’s really slow. Too slow for my taste and in a game like this I prefer to be up in the action instead of slowly taking targets out one by one.
It Just Ended…
The ending to this game wasn’t bad okay. It just ended abruptly. I expected more to happen in the final confrontation between B.J and Irene. She’s a fantastic character and the final scene between two of them should have been more. I’m not going to spoil it so I’ll just leave it at that for now.
Every Mission On The Submarine
The main hub isn’t bad. It’s actually fantastic I think. That doesn’t mean I want to do multiple missions on it. I loved the story bits that were told during this mission though.
Wolfenstein: The New Colossus isn’t afraid to make you uncomfortable. It’s not afraid to cross the political line and make both sides uncomfortable too. I applaud MachineGun games for the great job they’ve done with this series and I hope the third game continues to build on what’s shaping up to be one of the best trilogies in recent memory. Killing Nazis has never been more fun then it is in this game.
